What we store as memory is not an image of what we once perceived. Instead, we store the previous perception itself.

It might be tempting to think that my real self is the self in the here and now, the remembering self, and that the reactivated self is just imagery and stuff. However, this view is not accurate. It is more appropriate to say that my self is the identity formed between the self I am recalling at the moment and the self I was recalling at the moment. My self, this self, is established precisely in the interaction that occurs between perception and memory.

This is eminent reading. Probably the best introduction to phenomenology I have ever read. Sokolowski is a good writer, but even better; he is an eminent thinker. This should book should be "must read" for everyone interested in phenomenology. Really.
