I guess there is a classic tale that I was not familiar with so I can't compare this retelling with it. I found it utterly pointless. The story is told from the POV of a child as she watches her prostitute mother earn a living. Her mother and she are invited to visit a customer's home for the weekend and his creepiness is on full display.

At some times the author is very vulgar and at others her story telling fades to black.

I listened to both stories in this edition and if I could read stories like this every time I picked up a book, I'd die happy.

-- A Lonesome Speck of Home by Beth Cato - 4*
That was a fun story. I'd like to read it to a grandchild some day.
The last man still living in his destroyed neighborhood is our MC and he is witnessing regular fights between 2 giant aliens. The government can't help so after another alien lies in the desert destroyed, he goes to investigate with the help of his grandson. What he discover is really going on is quite entertaining and his 80 years of life experience helps him navigate what needs to be done.

After this story make sure you google for and read INSTRUCTIONS by Bob Leman

-- Makeisha in Time by Rachael K. Jones - 5*
Starts at 57:45
That story was amazing. I enjoyed every moment in the story. I can feel that growing urge to find everything she has written and see what I have been missing out on my whole life. This StarShipSofa version was read by Stefan Rudnicki. I could listen to him read a shopping list and be pleased.

What can I say without spoiling any of it? A woman whose "base" is in our time keeps traveling back in time. Moments here when she is "suffering a migraine" are lifetimes in another time. After awhile she starts reviewing history books looking for mentions of her or correcting mistakes in the writings. She visits museums which should have evidence of her... Why is she not there or someone else gets credit?

It has an abrupt ending which makes perfect sense but I want more, more, more!

A spectacular book. Not only for the stories, which are indeed hit and miss, which is to be expected from most anthologies, but for the project. Tony Smith and the District of Wonders set out to create something that would highlight the benefits that we reap from embracing diversity and this anthology is a testament to that. Some of the stories will challenge your worldview, some might make you uncomfortable, but you will leave enriched.

Again, this is not diversity just for diversity's sake, which seems to be a common point of contention with projects like these (or, say, quotas or affirmative action policies), but it really shows what we have to lose if we ignore what our world and the many different humans on it have to bring to the table. And if the stories don't make it clear, then the author interviews do.

Yes, some of the stories felt a little shallow and if I had rated each story individually and taken the arithmetic mean, it would've gotten maybe 3.5 stars. But make no mistake, there are some spectacular ones here. But the best thing is that this book has been able to do two things: 1. It has inspired me to actively seek out communities of writers that I never would've gotten to in any other way (mostly because of the authors' recommendations in their interviews), 2. it has validated my view that diversity is not only important because of moral considerations, but that it has real, concrete value that is hard to see if you haven't encountered it but hard to overlook once you have.

Highly recommended.

A (reprint) anthology celebrating the diversity that exists in the world of speculative fiction. True to that spirit, the stories themselves - which are generally pretty good - also show a great diversity, covering many subgenres of sf and fantasy.
