An old favorite. My children liked trying to balance things on their heads and pretending to be monkeys and stealing things from my head!

The story is based off a folklore of a cap seller selling various caps. Later he rests on a tree where monkeys take his caps. I wouldn’t have this in my classroom since I can’t decipher the greater meaning.

Caps for Sale is a book about a man selling caps on his head and having a cap stolen by monkeys while he is napping under the tree. Once he wakes up he realizes he is missing his caps and sees the monkeys. He is unhappy with the situation and asks for his caps back but the monkeys don't care. In the end, he drops his own cap on the floor and the monkeys do the same. He gets all of his caps back and ends up selling caps again.

I love reading this book out loud more and more each time. Next time, I might even incorporate felt caps.

One of my all time favorite picture books, I actually still own the copy I had as a child. I always loved the story itself and the illustrations are also wonderful. If you did not read this book as a child you should definitely read it as an adult you won't regret it.

Those mischievous monkeys are at it again, continuing the story of "Caps for Sale". New tale of the peddler, his caps, and a band of very funny monkeys.

Once there was a peddler who sold caps, but this particular peddler carries the caps on top of his head to sell them. On the same day that he originally encountered several mischievous monkeys, he is walking home and thinking about how he was not able to sell any caps that day. He goes home, but soon he realizes that the monkeys that had caused so many problems earlier in the day had followed him home. Instead of causing problems, however, the monkeys mimicking the man’s actions actually help the peddler solve problems like cleaning up his yard and selling his caps.

Published in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Caps for Sale, More Caps for Sale continues the story of the peddler and the mischievous monkeys featured in the original classic picture book. The story used inspiration from the original authors, and the illustrations were scanned, extracted, and manipulated from Slobodkina’s paintings to create the illustrations of the book to match the ones in the first. More Caps for Sale has the same easy-to-read pattern, charming illustrations, and gentle humor that people who love the first book will be able to appreciate in the sequel.

This book is great for students if you want to make them count the hats in the book. It is also a cute book that kids may enjoy. I would use this for the low grades however since it would be used for counting.

A peddler is trying to sell his caps, but he must outwit a group of mischievous monkeys in order to do so! Caps for Sale is a easy to read book that can be used to teach repetition, patterns, and even colors. This is a good book for early readers as it is filled with simple text while incorporating a good storyline and humor. The set problem and resolution is good for beginning readers who are learning about elements of a story.

Great book, and illustrations. It's super cute and a great sequel. This is really great for teaching estimation and financial literacy in math classes. It is for the younger kids, however it brings a fun way to get them thinking about money and estimation.

Slobodkina, E. (2015). Caps For Sale. New York: HaperCollins.
This story is a great way to teach about creative thinking and problem solving to preschoolers. The man is going through the town trying to sell his caps that he has piled on his head. The story names the hats by color allowing for reinforcements of colors learned. The man runs into some mischievous monkeys and must figure out how to get back the caps they take. This story would be a great one for young children to act out in a play fashion allowing them to really get into the story creatively.

I liked this book because of the writing as well as the illustrations. The writing was very intriguing as it kept the readers engaged. For example, “He looked to the right of him. No caps. He looked to the left of him. No caps. He looked to the back of him. No caps. He looked behind the tree. No caps”. The short sentences create tension and swift actions within the story which allows the story to move at a quick steady pace. This keeps the readers on their toes as they want to keep reading in order to find out what happened to the man’s caps. The illustrations were captivating as they enhanced the story by portraying what the text stated and added additional fluff for more engagement. For example when the text said, “And all the red caps came flying down out of the tree” the illustrations next to the text showed all the caps flying down the tree as the wind caused them to drift downwards to the ground. The illustration was able to show more than the text as the text did not mention the wind rustling against the caps, thus the illustration was able to enhance the story.

In this book a peddler keeps all his wares on his head rather than in a case or his coat. So when he falls asleep one day, a bunch of monkeys in a tree anger him by taking his caps. This book could teach a lesson about keeping your things safe and protected and about not losing your temper and asking nicely.

This is such a fun read. I will definitely get this for my future classroom. This book tells the story of a man trying to sell his caps. He wears all his caps on his head. He has brown caps, grey caps, checkered caps, and red caps. I noticed this will be a great way to add a little math during the read aloud and mentioned the type of pattern they see.

A hat salesman wakes up from a nap to a startling surprise -- all of his wares have been stolen by monkeys! How can the frustrated peddler get his caps back?

This is a classic of children's literature, and I can't believe it took me this long to finally read it. It is humorous and can be interactive in a readaloud with all the various motions (the peddler checking his high lineup of hats, the peddler shaking his finger at the monkeys, etc.). It also has some repetitious phrases, which children tend to enjoy in readalouds. It is a tiny bit on the longer side so it would probably work best with preschool-age and up. The illustrations fit the text nicely.

An engaging classic with bright illustrations and a beautiful surprise. There is simple but descriptive text with pleasing repetition throughout. I'm certain readers would join in and finish phrases before reading them because that's what it's been for generations.

The repetition in looking for his caps after falling asleep under the tree is a wonderful inclusion for reading aloud or to challenge young writers to employ the same tactic to build a story. Where indeed are his cap? I'm just as interested as he is in finding the caps by the time he finishes looking around the illustrations reveal the answer.

There are good sequential plot developments paired with the unexpected. Without the subtitle and the two monkeys hiding on the cover, very few readers familiar with the illustrated landscape would expect the monkeys! Good ideas to keep in mind for writing and developing plots for young authors.½
