> Sheng-yen, John Crook, Simon Child, Max Kalin, Zarko Andricevic, CHAN COMES WEST, New-York, Dharma Drum Publications, 2002, langue anglaise. — Quatre Européens ont, à ce jour, reçu la transmission du maître Sheng-yen (1930-2009) dans la tradition du Chan (Zen) chinois : les britanniques John Crook et Simon Child, le suisse Max Kalin et le croate Zarko Andricevic. Ce livre relate leur parcours. Dans un style simple, chacun retrace sa découverte du bouddhisme puis sa rencontre avec le maître chinois, parfois ses errances et ses difficultés, enfin son expérience du kenshô (l'illumination façon zen). L'ensemble est bref et se lit comme les pages d'un journal intime. Dans la préface rédigée par Sheng-yen lui-même, celui-ci raconte son propre itinéraire puis explique le sens qu'il accorde à la transmission, cette reconnaissance formelle du disciple spécifique aux écoles zen. Qu'en feront ces Occidentaux ? Leur culture, leur parcours sont évidemment différents et puis, à la différence de Sheng-yen, aucun d'entre eux n'est moine. "Comment dois-je enseigner le Chan en Grande-Bretagne ?" demande un jour John Crook et Sheng-yen de répondre : "Je suis chinois, vous êtes anglais. C'est à vous de trouver !" La transmission apparaît dès lors comme la marque d'une confiance inébranlable, que si le Chan est venu en Occident, il s'y perpétuera, et sûrement sous des formes différentes qu'en Chine.
