Tom Scotland was educated at Waid Academy, Anstruther and at the University of Edinburgh where he studied Medicine. He graduated in 1971 and followed a career in surgery. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1975 and specialised in orthopaedics. He was appointed a mostra altro consultant in Aberdeen in 1983 where his particular interests were knee surgery, paediatric orthopaedics and tumour surgery. For the three years before his retirement in 2007, he was lead clinician of the Scottish Sarcoma Managed Clinical Network, an organisation tasked with improving the management of patients with malignant bone and soft tissue rumours. Since retiring, he has pursued his interest in the Great War and has been a frequent visitor to the Western Front. He has found cycling the best way to explore the battlefields and has kept in touch with friends and former colleagues by leading cycling expeditions to important locations in France and Belgium. He has delivered lectures about surgery of the Great War at many national and international meetings and has made a particular study of Aberdonian surgeon Sir Henry Gray, who played a pivotal role in the development of orthopaedic surgery on the Western Front. He co-authored Gray's biography in a work entitled Henry Gray, Surgeon of the Great War: Saving Lives in a Theatre of Destruction and has co-edited a volume War Surgery 1914-18. He has co-authored three other works Wars, Pestilence and the Surgeon's Blade, dealing with British military medicine and surgery during the 19th century, Understanding the Somme 1916: An Illuminating Battlefield Guide and Understanding the Ypres Salient: An illuminating Battlefield Guide. mostra meno
