This informational text about the civil rights movement of 1963 captures the inhumane treatment of African American girls who were prisoners in the Leesburg Stockade. The stories of these brave girls will inspire social responsibility. Includes Author’s Note, Timeline, Source Notes, Glossary, Bibliography, Further Information, Index.

This does a great job introducing a really wide range of women from history to present, with decent photos and succinct summaries. It's a great resource for younger kids, I think, because it works so well as an introduction. It definitely left me wanting more information about the women I was unfamiliar with, so it's a bit light on details. But I think that's purposeful, and it would work wonderfully to read with a kid and ask them which women they'd like to know more about. The other great thing about reading this is that you finish feeling pretty fantastic about women in general. It's a wonderful read for a day when you feel down about things like sexism; it will put in you in a great mood!

The unofficial guide to minecraft mining and farming
Heather E. Schwartz
One of the books in the series relating real life situations to the popular online game. Although most of the text explains the game, there are images and explanations that relate to occupations in real life like mining engineers or farmers. It explains certain aspects of the game staying safe and challenging yourself to promote yourself within the game.
Divided into 5 chapters with a table of contents and an index. There is a glossary and a page with resources for more information. It has only 32 pages, and might not entice the diehard fans of the game. It could be used for a research project but does not have a depth of information. Other titles in the series are Minecraft construction, Minecraft mods, and Minecraft survival. The layout is colorful and attractive.

A well written biography with photos on each page, and a lot of information on this singer and songwriter. Included in the back of the book is a timeline of important dates of events in her life, source notes, selected bibliography, further reading sections, and an index.

The World of Minecraft explores the history and culture surrounding the Minecraft games, books, toys, and more. Fans of the ever popular video game will be able to learn how the game was created as well as all of the worlds that can be chosen. There is also a section of how Minecraft is moving forward and on to bigger and better things. There is also a glossary of terms, and an index in the back as well as a section about learning more about video games and websites. I would recommend this for any collection with fans of Minecraft.

In this biography, we learn about Lonnie Johnson who is an inventor and engineer of products we still use today. Lonnie was interested in making things, even at an early age. When Lonnie was young, the law of segregation was still in effect in Alabama, where he lived. He wanted to become an engineer, but was discouraged by anyone he told because he wouldn't be able to have those opportunities being a black male. This all changed when Lonnie entered a science fair, where he built a robot called "Linex". Though many people who participated in this fair were discriminatory towards African Americans, the judges were not and Lonnie won first place for his robot. Lonnie went onto college in Alabama, and he worked for NASA and the Air Force. What many people don't know is that Lonnie Johnson invented the super soaker water gun, the nerf gun, and the solar panels on houses that create electricity.

I absolutely loved this book. Throughout the book we are not only given great facts about Lonnie Johnson, but we are also given quotes from him on different pages. The quotes are motivational, and give a genuine feel to the book. Whenever I think of biographies, I think of people who are not with us anymore, but that isn't the case at all. Lonnie Johnson is still alive today, and I think his accomplishments should be talked about more after reading about him. Lonnie went through many hardships to accomplish what he did, and I think this book shows that, even if the odds are against you, you can still accomplish your goals. We aren't shown enough African American engineers, and scientists, in classrooms today. We must incorporate more diverse figures within the classroom in order to have bountiful libraries for our little readers. I would love to find more biographies about Lonnie Johnson because I think he is very interesting.

This book is about the personal and professional life of Miley Cyrus. It tells all about Miley including where she grew up, who her family is, and what she does for a living. She grew up on a family ranch in Tennessee. She wanted to become a performer just like her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. She was eight years old when she made her acting debut on a TV show that her dad starred in. Her mother is her manager as well. She has three brothers and two sisters. She had a hit TV show on Disney Channel which sparked her fame immensely. The book also talks about all the charities that she gives to and helps with. I really liked this book. I chose this book because I am a big fan of Miley Cyrus even to this day. Although this book is older it was nice to reminisce and learn more about the “old” Miley. She is a talented actress and now singer and I will probably always enjoy her work. A classroom extension could be to have students discuss in detail their favorite actress on TV now with their classmates. Another extension could be to have students draw a picture of their favorite actress in a TV show or movie that they have been in.
