The author was introduced to shiatsu by an acquaintance affiliated with the state Department in Tokyo, wher eSchoultz was living with his family. Shiatsu was suggested as a therapy for stress and tension.
So impressed with the method, Schultz enrolled as a student at the Shiatsu Institute in 1954 and in 1966 became the fifth student to obtain a Master's Degree.
During his period of study, Schultz moved his family back to the U.S., continuing his exporting business. But Schultz also continued his study and practice of shiatsu and often helped friends to relieve their ailments with the treatment. Word spread quickly and in 1957 Schultz opened the first shaitsu office in the U.S. in Long Beach, California.
In 1962 Schultz moved his shiatsu office to Desert Hot Springs, California. People from all over the world have come there for treatment.
