Helmut Schmid (1942–2018)

In the 50s and 60s Basel became the meeting place for young typographers and designers from various countries, mainly due to Emil Ruder's work and personality. This book attemps to document this creative period of modern typography. Internationally active designers and teachers write about their time at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule Basel (Basel School of Design) with such distinguished personalities as Emil Ruder, Robert Buechler, Kurt Hauert and Armin Hofmann. Contributors include a.o.: Karl Gerstner, Hans-Rudolf Lutz, Fritz Gottschalk, Wolfgang Weingart, Ake Nilsson, Peter Teubner, Will van Sambeek.
Also included is Emil Ruder's essay; on drinking tea, typography, historicism, symmetry and asymmetry.
Helmut Schmid's design of this book is a fine example of the typography and design which the school in Basel helped create.… (altro)
