All the well-known (and sometimes very weird) rhymes with a story to give the rhymes context, and the ever wonderful illustrations of Axel Scheffler. It also comes with a CD, and we still own a CD-player, so we were able to listen to it! The 9-year-old followed the text while listening, so the book and audio package provided exactly what a young language learner needs. Even younger kids can listen and look at the pictures, but it helps at the later stage of matching spelling to sound as well. Highly recommended!

This funny story is about a monster who begins to discover that maybe he doesn't want to be scary, but he wants to be friendly instead. It is a funny story that teaches children that they can be whatever they choose.

A mouse is taking a stroll through the deep, dark wood when along comes a hungry fox, then an owl, and then a snake. The mouse is good enough to eat but smart enough to know this, so he invents . . . the gruffalo! As Mouse explains, the gruffalo is a creature with terrible claws, and terrible tusks in its terrible jaws, and knobbly knees and turned-out toes, and a poisonous wart at the end of its nose. But Mouse has no worry to show. After all, there's no such thing as a gruffalo. . . .

READING LEVEL: 2.3 AR POINTS: 0.5

A cute, short rhyming little story about a little mouse who out-wits all his enemies, then even out-wits the gruffalo.

This one goes to my daughter-in-laws Pre-school class.

A clever mouse outsmarts a cast of predators by tricking them into thinking he was meeting an even bigger predator for lunch. And as luck would have it the imaginary monsters favorite lunch happens to always be the animal that wants to eat the mouse. Except the mouse has no idea the Gruffalo does exist!
Great story for a read aloud with predictive text and repetitive rhythm.

I recall reading this to my youngest brother and enjoying it, but then also the name fit well into an inside joke.

I have fallen in love with The Gruffalo!! Did it for October's My First Books at Chief Jo and the children loved it. I did not realize it was a show (and now need to watch it). It's a great book to do voices with

A mouse takes a walk through the deep dark woods. She meets a few predators along the way, including a Gruffalo, but outwits them all. OMG, this is my favorite board book of all time. I love reading it to my son so much that I can recite it. Definitely suggested for babies through five year olds.

Little mouse takes a stroll in the dark woods. A fox who sees the mouse thinks he would make for a good meal. But, the clever mouse claims it will meet a Gruffalo for lunch at the same place. Unaware of what a Gruffalo is, the fox prods and mouse describes a few parts of Gruffalo and scares the fox further by stating that Gruffalo’s favorite food is roasted fox. Hearing the mouse, the fox runs. The mouse meets an owl and a snake who think of it as good food. But the mouse chases them away by discussing his lunch plans with the Gruffalo.
When the mouse thinks he fooled everyone, he counters with the Gruffalo. What happens to the mouse? And the Gruffalo?

The book is about the clever mouse’s incredible imagination to save himself from the situation. But why is it called ‘The Gruffalo’? Oh, we know fella looks like a grumpy buffalo. It’s funny, rhymes, repeats, and got a hero and villains (but poor ones). A perfect formula to please every big and little child.
A must-read rhyming book with beautiful illustrations and an endearing story.

This is a story of a clever mouse who protects himself by inventing an animal ... a gruffalo. Then, when he meets a real gruffalo, he has to be even more clever to avoid becoming the gruffalo's next meal.

I was prepared to like this, but when reading it to my toddler I was disappointed to find that every single character given a gender (all but the mouse protagonist) was described as male -- and the mouse protagonist was described as male in the blurb on the back. Gender was entirely unnecessary, too -- in every instance switching gender would have been just fine, or using the neuter "it" (they were all animals with no apparent gender in the illustrations), or just referring to them by their animal names ("Owl", "Fox", "Snake", "Gruffalo"). [return][return]This kind of sloppy failure to invest even the tiniest bit of consideration just frustrates and angers me. No parent wants to constantly have to re-gender while they're reading just so the toddler doesn't get the idea that all animals are male, or male is the default. Not to mention the confusion that results when simultaneously teaching the kid to read .... [return][return]In summary: An amusing trickster story written in rhyme that unfortunately perpetuates sexist stereotypes more frequently found decades ago. Not recommended for either boys or girls; you can get from other sources the same kind of amusing story without having to spend hours neutralizing or explaining sexism to your little ones.½

This book is about a mouse making his way through the woods. Of couse a little mouse is food to a lot big animals so the mouse tells every big animal that tries to eat him a trick. Until he finds out that the trick is actually real. Then he reverses the trick to still get through the woods and makes it back home safely and unharmed.
