I read this for a small group at church. It is an excellent book about our inner lives and how dealing with and respecting our emotions can hep us to deepen our relationship with God and with others.

This book was a slow progress, but built up speed quickly. I would think of this as a practical framework to explore and revisit to help one design a more disciplined religious life that builds a closer relationship with God. There is a lot here that would be good to work through and revisit. I particularly liked that Scazzero has mined from various Christian resources that have value to disciples. This isn't a specific game plan, but more of a tool box with advice on how to build the "Rule of Life" that works for you. Scazzero even points out that these rules will change over time based on your own personal journey.
I read the eBook though Overdrive. I will probably buy the physical book, so I can mark up with notes to review later.

This book is one I have been taking very slowly. It's not a quick read, rather one to take in spurts to be able to really reflect and digest the material. I am about half way through and it has already opened my eyes many areas in my life that need tedning to in order to not end up not going through the motions as a leader.

This is a devotional book that accompanies Emotionally Healthy Spirituality. Users are encouraged to do devotion twice a day, with two minutes of quiet time before and after the devotion. The devotion itself can be very short, as short as one minute. I find this format reasonably easy to implement: 5 minutes each time, two times a day. I also feel refreshed by the two minute quiet time before and after. The content of the devotional reading is good, but I often feel the devotional reading only barely explains or supplements the devotional Scripture verse. And some devotional reading are already used as illustrations in the book Emotionally Healthy Spirituality, so I felt I was reading the same material repeatedly. All in all, I really like the format and will try to incorporate this format into other devotionals as well.

This book discusses why many Christians are....not transformed from the heart by their faith. Why many Christians have beliefs/values that come from their family background and culture, rather than their faith. The author argues that this is because Christians do not pay attention to what is underneath the surface -- their beliefs, values and emotions. He suggested some ways to work on a deeper transformation, including identifying hidden beliefs/values espoused from one's family background, acknowledging rather than ignoring one's negative emotions, and turning one's focus to God more often in one's daily/weekly rhythm of life.

I like that the author raises many -- and I mean MANY -- good points. Unfortunately I don't think he is a very articulate or expressive writer. The examples he used to illustrate or explain his points confuses me. I usually need to reflect for some time on my own before understanding the points he was trying to make. (But once you do understand his points, you really appreciate how good the points are :P )

UPDATE (08/2020):
There are so many reasons I appreciate this book. (I'm changing from 4 to 5 stars.) Scazzero tackles what sadly is a controversial topic (contemplative spirituality) with both grace and conviction, but he does it (I thought) in a way that is gentle and persuasive. This will be my go-to recommended book for almost everyone looking to become more of what God calls them to be. I can only hope to implement his suggestions and practices. If, however, you've been on the contemplative/emotionally healthy journey for sometime, it might feel a little introductory.

FIRST REVIEW (01/2020): You know those books that you read and lament not reading 10 years before. For me, that's this book. Basically since my divorce, where I was forced to recon with the fact I had emotions, I've tried to work at what he describes in this book. Each chapter touches on essential ideas for emotional maturity, which means there are books available on each.

He combines contemplative spirituality with emotional health. It was wonderful, so good in fact I bought a copy before finishing the audiobook. And I plan to read it again before the year is out, and hopefully I'll give a fuller review!

I actually think the book (workbook) is great and the lessons are helpful (for Christians and non-Christians alike!). They are aimed as improving communication and expectations between people in all kinds of relationships. The video portion is ... a bit cheesy, to say the least. But, overall, I would recommend the series, video and all. (Just... I recommend the video portion with the warning that it is cheesy! Just take from it what is helpful :))
**Note: read as part of a small group study.

A series of 12 studies. Topics include: Justification, Lordship of Jesus Christ, Temptation, Faith, Holiness, Compassion, Servanthood, Self-Image, Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ, Humility, and Perserverance. Leadership notes included at the end.

I wish that they had included the Scripture passages referenced instead of having to have this booklet plus a Bible in order to do the study.

In the groundbreaking devotional book, Peter Scazzero introduces the ancient spiritual discipling of the Daily Office. The basic premise of God more than once a day so the "the practice of the presence of God" becomes a real possibility. Each day offers two Daily offices - Morning/Midday and Midday/evening - where each pause can last from five-to twenty-minutes long. Try it for that next devotional you need for yourself or for a short devotion for your group.

In this handbook Peter Scazzero provides all you need to know for starting and leading an evangelistic Bible study. He discusses how to invite people, how to get them talking, how to help them understand what they read, and many other practical concerns. He even includes six Bible studies (with leader's notes) you can use with your group.

The Emotionally Healthy Church, Updated and Expanded Edition, the newly updated and expanded edition of the groundbreaking bestseller The Emotionally Healthy Church, features a fuller, deeper look at the six principles contained in the original and includes a crucial, additional chapter: Slow Down to Lead with Integrity. New Life Fellowship in Queens, New York, had it all: powerful teaching, dynamic ministries, an impressive growth rate, and a vision to do great works for God. Things looked good---but beneath the surface, circumstances were more than just brewing. They were about to boil over, forcing Peter Scazzero to confront needs in his church and himself that went deeper than he'd ever imagined. What he learned about the vital link between emotional health, relational depth, and spiritual maturity can shed new light on painful problems in your own church. In this revised and expanded edition of his Gold Medallion Award--winning book, Scazzero shares refreshing new insights and a different and challenging slant on what it takes to lead your congregation to wholeness and maturity in Christ. Our churches are in trouble, says Scazzero. They are filled with people who are * unsure how to biblically integrate anger, sadness, and other emotions * defensive, incapable of revealing their weaknesses * threatened by or intolerant of different viewpoints * zealous about ministering at church but blind to their spouses' loneliness at home * so involved in 'serving' that they fail to take care of themselves * prone to withdraw from conflict rather than resolve it Sharing from New Life Fellowship's painful but liberating journey, Scazzero reveals exactly how the truth can and does make you free---not just superficially, but deep down. This expanded edition of The Emotionally Healthy Church not only takes the original six principles further and deeper, but also adds a seventh crucial principle. You'll acquire knowledge and tools that can help you and others: * look beneath the surface of problems * break the power of past wounds, failures, sins, and circumstances * live a life of brokenness and vulnerability * recognize and honor personal limitations and boundaries * embrace grief and loss * make incarnation your model to love others * slow down to lead with integrity This new edition shares powerful insights on how contemplative spirituality can help you and your church slow down---an integral key to spiritual and emotional health. The Emotionally Healthy Church, Updated and Expanded Edition includes story after story of people at New Life whose lives have been changed by the concepts in this book. Open these pages and find out how your church can turn a new corner on the road to spiritual maturity.

You'll never grow up if you aren't willing to examine your inner life. A leader in God's church is a person of prayer and the Word, who loves Christ

Something is desperately wrong with most churches today. Many sincere followers of Christ who are passionate for God and his work are unaware of the crucial link between emotional health and spiritual maturity. They present themselves as spiritually mature but are stuck at a level of immaturity that current models of discipleship have not addressed. Discipleship that really transforms a church must integrate emotional health with spiritual maturity. The Emotionally Healthy Church, winner of the Gold Medallion Book Award, offers a strategy for discipleship that accomplishes healthy living and actually changes lives.

I need to revisit this book and implement some of it's ideas. Church planters need to visit this book or at the least be aware of its ideas.

“It’s impossible to be spiritually mature, while remaining emotionally immature,” Scazzero argues, pointing out that contemporary spirituality by and large ignores the deeper emotional needs of believers. Born out of the author’s own struggle, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality offers a spiritual paradigm (based on ancient spirituality; daily office, Sabbath) which supports emotional health (based on basic psychology). It has a bit of a self-help feel, but does challenge us to allow Christ to heal our emotional baggage. A-
