This is a quirky and plot-driven story, following a seagull and a cat. The visual story communicates directly to the readers.

Something is afoot in the waiting for God small-town Englishness of Bexhill. Stagnant teenagers prowl the pavement, dodging mobility scooters, their rage at the cage of quiet conservatism ready to steam. The place seems designed to stifle and constrain, giving the impression that there is not enough room to swing a cat.

From on high soars a seaside terror, sparkling beady eyes of darkness seeking out a new class of prey. With predatory glee this pioneering gull embraces an opening up of its consciousness and embarks on an unprecedented killing spree. Its targets shock the sleepy residents of Bexhill, and everyone really. Soon, the instinct of the brethren of the victims to regain their natural place in the food chain inspires them to stage a fightback against their uppity attacker.

Bird of Prey was a really cool find. Quick read, and entertaining throughout. I am fond of cats so I did wince at certain points. But it’s only words. Darkly and wryly humorous in parts, this was interwoven nicely with more poignant observations and lightly satirical commentary. The cast of characters satisfies and the sense of place is strong. Glad I took a chance on it.
