This genial book lovingly and amusingly recounts the author's youthful obsession with his historically inept hometown football team, Bromley, of the Isthmian League, which at that time represented probably the sixth or seventh level of the English football pyramid. In the bargain the reader also gets a chronicle of the more general tragicomedies of adolescence; three schools in a year, an unrequited crush, trying to ingratiate himself with the school toughs, the valentine that never came, a seemingly endless quest for a job, and his own play for a Sunday league team which managed to be even worse than Bromley all have a role to play here. The author looks back at it all with a dry, self-deprecating humor which is quite winning. This was an intriguing world to enter.… (altro)
