I have often said that sometimes you just want a book where you don’t have to think, you just want to escape. This weekend I embarked upon a the total reorganization of my kitchen cabinets and pantry. I needed a getaway. No, I needed a serious escape from the reality that was my kitchen.

This book gave me that and I was grateful.

It was, for me, a fast and satisfying read if predictable. But that is not to say I was not thrilled to have it on hand to take my mind off of what awaited me. I wish I had another in the wings for what is still ahead.

Escapist novels like this are, I do believe necessary within anyone’s reading list. Doesn’t mean I want my romance novels to be dribble, I do want some manner of substance within the confines of what ones expects and this one delivered; a strong female lead, a handsome and yet forward thinking man for his time and of course, happily ever after.

I sincerely doubt I am spoiling anything by writing that. It does take a bit to get there and the route is not the expected but that is where the fun comes in. And this book was fun. It is a sexy read so keep that in mind if you are not looking for that kind of book.

Who doesn’t love a good heroic romance? Rayne delivers with this twist on your usual Highland romance with a Black protagonist and hints of history throughout. Ailsa makes a fierce character with her headstrong courageousness, while Kallum balances that out with the male version. Sparks and more fly between the two as this plot gets better and better. This was my first Rayne novel, but won’t be my last.
*I received an arc from the publisher through NetGalley for an honest review

The heroine was held in captive enslavement at Stirling Castle and plans to escape from it after failing twice before. As the heroine took the chance to escape, she inadvertently ended up in a group of escaped captives, led by the hero. The hero persuades the heroine to go with him to keep his secret identity from being exposed and would have helped the heroine return to her clan, if she had followed him quietly. Alas, the heroine has her own plans and the two ends up making sparks of the romantic kind. And as the journey in the Highlands proceeded on, the two uncover secrets that they face together.

This is my first Lisa Rayne book and the start of the Shadow Lairds series. It features characters that are not mainstream in this historical romance time period. It was interesting to read about these characters that aren't mentioned that much. Featuring hardships that are related to their ethnic background, it was nice to read about a couple that fell in love among adversity. The story did drag a bit in certain areas of the story, and there are also other areas that would have been nice to have more details. But overall, the book is an enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more Shadow Lairds books in the future.

**Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the review copy that I voluntarily read and reviewed.
