Interesting collection of essays on rise of what might be called modern-day warlords - non-state actors that wield considerable power and influence not just in their (usually criminal) milieu but have great impact on the society in general. And sometimes that impact can completely crush governments, squeeze the legitimate rule and impose warlord's will to a greater area.

Some essays are more on topic others are not (and might get you thinking are you reading a book about violent non-state actors) but in general book clearly describes issues and challenges for the modern society that could be used by warlords and other criminal elements to fester and grow.

Interesting, but keep in mind that some essays are not that directly related to the topic of warlords and trans-national organized crime.

This book provides a good overview on how illicit trade and organised crime fill the cracks when governments fail to take care of their populations. Warlord entrepreneurs can rise to power only when supported by their neighbourhoods and even local government. They do fill a niche for local people. These problems will only increase with the advent of climate change, resource depletion and rising global inequality. Warlord entrepreneurs will not only rise in developing countries, but can also decent upon populations in developed countries. Where big corporations also depend on warlord entrepreneurs or even facilitate them.

The book gives a good tour around different kinds of warlord entrepreneurs, how dire the situation looks and some solutions. But by trying to provide such a broad view, it skimps a lot of subjects or remains quite shallow. All in all it's a good overview on this subject. A book to follow up is "McMafia: Seriously Organised Crime" by Misha Glenny.
