A beautifully illustrated collection of poetry from the 20th century. The poems are organized into one or two-page spreads with cohesive themes and illustrations. The poems are fun and interesting, striking a balance between relevance to children and expansive themes. The accompanying art is lovely and often directly references the poems.

This book goes through a collection of short poems. Each poem has their own topicand has a silly theme. These poems are all the author, Dennis Lee's, favorite poems

I recommend this fun book to primary students. It is great for new readers as they are short easy reading for the kids to stay! Would love to have this as an option for students in my library.

I really liked this poem book. There are a lot of poems but some of the ones that I read were good and silly. I think maybe a first grader would be able to follow along with no issues. These poems are pretty long. They have good illustrations with every poem passage. It has really good children literature for sure. Good tongue twisters too.

Hilarious book of poems. Lots of great examples of common literary devices like onomatopoeia and alliteration . Would use to model specific examples of literary devices in a poetry unit with k-5th graders.

I chose this book because it reminded a lot about the book Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz. I loved a good scary story and this poetry book kind of reminded me of it. Nothing too too scary but I think just enough to make a few children a bit nervous.

A poetry book that has it all! There are poems for all different interest levels from people, jellyfish, dinosaurs and bizarre creatures. Elementary students will find these poems easy to read, silly and playful. There are around 100 poems in this book and some have illustrations too. Read this book to enjoy fun word play and laugh.

This is a delightful, silly, charming book of poetry about animals mixed up. my favorite may be the pocupineapple. This inspired my 5 year old's imagination in a huge way, we read it through many times before it had to go back to the library.

Author Jack Prelutsky and illustrator Carin Berger, who previously collaborated on the wonderful Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant and Other Poems, return in this second picture book collection of poems featuring portmanteau creatures. Sixteen delightful poems, full of clever wordplay, and nimbly constructed so as to simply trip off the tongue when read aloud, are paired with enchantingly beautiful multi-media artwork, with many illustrations featuring Joseph Cornell-inspired dioramas. Here we have the eponymous celestial Stardines, the blustery Bluffaloes, the hard-working Chormorants, the loose-lipped Tattlesnakes, and the ineffectual Plandas, among many others. In an amusing jest, given that this is a collection of poems, the book closes with the Bardvarks:

"BARDVARKS think they're poets
And persist in writing rhyme.
Their words are uninspired
And a total waste of time.
But BARDVARKS don't know this,
So not only do they write
With unbearable pretension—
They incessantly recite.

BARDVARKS have no talent
For composing simple verse.
They don't improve with practice
And in fact are getting worse.
Undeterred, they keep on writing
And reciting every day.
That's why BARDVARKS are a problem—
You cant' make them go away."

Fortunately for the reader, Prelutsky's poetry far exceeds the Bardvark's, and his writing makes Stardines Swim High Across the Sky and Other Poems an absolute pleasure to read, just as Berger's artwork makes it a joy to peruse. I was particularly struck by the illustrations here, and as a lover of Joseph Cornell's found-object art boxes, was thrilled to see the recognition of his influence, in Berger's dedication to him, at the beginning of the book. This is one I would strongly recommend to young poetry lovers, as well as to fellow admirers of the artist.

Author/illustrator team Jack Prelutsky and Marylin Hafner present thirteen Halloween poems in this seasonal early reader. Creating costumes, carving jack-o-lanterns, trick-or-treating on the big night, bobbing for apples at a party, avoiding the local haunted house—all these and other themes are explored here...

It's Halloween is the second holiday poetry collection I have read from this pair, following upon their It's Thanksgiving (they also worked together on It's Christmas), and I found it delightful! The poems themselves were entertaining, and read well, capturing the fun and fright of Halloween night and its attendant customs. The artwork had a lovely vintage style, reminding me at times of illustrator like Trina Schart Hyman (high praise indeed!). Recommended to anyone looking for Halloween poetry collections for younger children, perhaps five to eight.

I do have a soft spot for dinosaur anything. If your child is dinosaur focused, add in a sprinkle of these poems.

YMMV- there is a time line with millions of years.

Prelutsky combines animals and inanimate objects to create silly new animals. Love the collage illustrations. I plan to figure out a way to make my own Clocktopus for the library...

Three children illustrate their very different personalities. The personalities are explored and appreciated. The different kinds of “me’s” create a unique and special world.

I would recommend this book to younger elementary students who are reading short poems. This book goes through many short poems about different topics that are funny and interesting for little kids. This would be good in the classroom because there are many options of children's poetry all in one book and they are all short so they are attainable for children to read.
