Marianne Power

This book came to my notice after a dry joke by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks in his latest book. Because hasn't everyone wondered if they really work?

I'll fully admit to skimming most of the middle section. Of all the books to focus on, my least favorite got two chapters. I was already aware that the attitude the writer (of the book Powers was focusing on) was seeking led to a bad place(mentally). But, as soon as I slipped past that part, I started to become engrossed in the subtle personal developments.

I was really impressed with the epiphany the writer had and was immensely glad that yet another person is normalizing therapy. Her finale was quite good, as were her mother's observations.

Now I'm furiously browsing through my shelves to see how many self-help books I've actually read and loved. Are they worth it?… (altro)

I was a bit shocked with Power's blunt honesty about her perceptions of herself: did she really see herself like that? And I realised probably yes... so how refreshing to have this authenticity, vulnerability and humour to share with her readers her darkest hours. Power probably went much deeper than most in her ambitions - and certainly misguided in her application of the advice in the books she read - but she's also a testimony to who we can be as people: extreme, fun, dark, passionate, depressed, victorious... this book has all the emotions with the sharp eye of the journalist.… (altro)
