Starter Vegetable Gardens, 2nd Edition 24 No-Fail Plans for Small Organic Gardens by Barbara Pleasant
Lots of color photos throughout. Table of contents shows chapters in different colors to help you navigate more easily.
Introduction discusses how to start right now. Work isn't terribly hard but you are growing your own food.
This book is for all levels of expertise. Summarizes the chapters of the book so you know which section you need to start at.
I like reading the whole book although I've been gardening since I was a child. Book is broken up into starter gardens and follows them for 3 years.
Instructions exactly for what you need to set it all up, measurements and equipment needed are listed.
Also instructions throughout the process til it's time to harvest and even that is given in details, easy to follow and actually do yourself.
Love how they specify seeds you will need also.
Love sections on seed growing as that's the method we use.
Also guidance on what to plant as per your planting zone, very helpful!
Also how to harvest and preserve is included. SO VERY RESOURCEFUL INFORMATION.
Received this review copy from Storey Publishing, Storey Publishing, LLC via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

I'm feeling ready to go beyond adding a few vegies to my flower garden. Last year the cucumbers weren't as good as the year prior, but I did forget to mention watering the garden before I went on vacation.... But the beans were a lot of fun to grow. I like the process more than the product, so that is probably why I haven't done too much with vegies. This book is very informative and motivating. I'm going to try the gardening straight out of the soil bags. Much easier than breaking new ground. Even got some seeds ordered. Of course, I had to get some flower seeds as well. I'll keep those interested posted!

Good ideas. Very repetitive content between all the gardens. Good illustrations. Poor Kindle conversion; section titles are in 100pt font.

Very practical compendium of ideas to help you plan to grow the right amount of food and use it wisely. The author provides a lot of recipes and suggestions for food storage, some rather unusual, but all valid. I'm going to try some of her food drying tips. Candied rhubarb and cinnamon-sugar pumpkin chews sound delicious, and they are new to me. This is a book to read carefully, in detail, more than once, and refer to repeatedly.

So many gardening authors are from the Northeast and their timetable and challenges are too different from what Southern gardeners face. This early Barbara Pleasant book has turned out to be my favorite practical guide, tuned to conditions here in Georgia. I rely especially on her helps for setting up a schedule for a progressive growing season so I can produce seedlings ready at the right time to set out.

I recently freaked out because I couldn't find my copy. Knowing that it is long out of print, I look on the Web for used copies. And, holy smoke, they were $50 and up. Glad I finally found mine because I would have replaced it even at that ridiculous price.

This book has a lot of pre-planned gardens, but that's not quite what I was hoping for. It's a beautiful, full color book with lots of pictures and diagrams. However, if you already have a garden planned or planted, this book isn't for you.

I love this little book! It's set up month by month and even in December I get to read a little about gardening. Pleasant's advice is good and it's just such an upbeat little book!
