this was a fun adventure that ends as a first book in a series often used to - with nothing wrapped up and the next course of action just beginning. it was more interesting to see how alanna hid her gender from the boys than to see how they became knights, but since that was one of the main thrusts of the story this was overall pretty enjoyable for me. as it really doesn't totally stand on its own, i can't comment on the whole thing, but i can definitely see why so many women cite this as an important book series from their childhoods.½

This was a slow and laborious read. Now, that’s not to say it wasn’t enjoyable – because it was. I still rated it 3 out of 5, folks. There was just several hours worth of story that felt like we weren’t accomplishing much of anything other than world building. There were times that I wondered if we’d actually have a proper crux/climax/conflict to the story or if we would only entertain the day-to-day life details of Arram as he moved through the years at the school for mages. Thankfully there is a climax to the story, albeit an underwhelming one, so at least the plot wasn’t completely neglected.

One really great thing going for this book is the depth of the characters. There isn’t a one left with an unclear background or personality traits. You get a great feel for each of the characters and how they interact together in this story. I especially enjoyed the dynamics between Varice, Ozorne, and Arram and I look forward to seeing where that dynamic goes in the future of these books.

As far as content goes, I think it’s got some great qualities for young adult/middlegrade readers to contemplate. There’s a strong sense of moral correctness within our protagonist, Arram, and I think that could do some good among the reading youth of society. I’m curious to see what Pierce does with these themes in the next book.

The writing is good, but the the majority of the day-to-day details came across with a “stating the facts” kinda feel that left me with slight disinterest in those parts. The world building is great but I would have been incredibly disappointed if it had not been with all the details and information-dumping we endured in the tedious parts of this story. It’s safe to say that I am not left wondering how something works in this world that Pierce has built.

I feel like this whole book was spent setting up for the next one in the series. And of course, despite my disappointments in this one, I will be reading the next one. My hope is that it will be faster pace and less tedious now that there’s been so much groundwork done.

1.5 out of 5. I didn't hate this, but it is truly not worth reading. Tortall completists excepted... maybe.

The prose is Bad. How can you write so many books and have editors and still be so incompetent on a sentences level? "Aram was excited. This was exciting!"

I was shocked how long it was and how little plot it had. Plot threads (which are clearly just setup for the next book) start to show up maybe 60% of the way through. She tries to make it character-driven, but DWJ easily leaves her in the dust. I was trying to figure out what on earth Pierce was excited about writing in this book, and I think it might be as simple as, she wanted to write about a fantasy medieval university? Not enough to hang a book on!½

What a delightful trip back to the world of Tortall. I had been hesitant to start this one as it felt strange to not have the story centered on our favorite Lionesses. I was elated to run into many familiar faces throughout this book.

Daine starts out just slightly older than Alanna was when we met her, although that is about the end of the similarities in backstory. The way the magic in this story was explained made it feel exciting and fresh while still acknowledging the magic we already knew of in the world. It did take a few chapters for me to feel connected to Daine, which was well worth the wait.

Excited to jump into the next book soon to see where Daine’s journey takes her.

Not a lot happens in this lengthy slice-of-life novel. It's possible that most of the conflict is supposed to arise from the dramatic irony of knowing the characters' fates, but this tension will probably be lost on new readers. In other words, it's a prequel.

I enjoyed this book, but I found the identity of the killer to be very unsatisfying. Maybe I really am going to have to make a shelf for endings ruined by that particular trope.

Sandry's Book (which I have recently seen listed as "The Magic in the Weaving") introduces readers to the Emelan universe, one of two universises created by Tamara Pierce.

Although I enjoyed both, I prefer the books from the Tortal universe. Both are set in fantasy medieval realms: a romanticized version of medieval times with the addition of magic. Each Tortall quartet focuses on a single main character, while each Emelan quartet focuses on four. The former allows the reader to gain a deeper understanding of the protagonist, while the latter provides more variety. The former also feels like a more developed world with more cultures and species. In addition, the different types of magic used by the four protagonists - and later, their students - are not different enough to feel like unique storylines. In Tortall, by contrast, Alanna and Kel are knights, Diane is a wild mage, and Aly is a spy. Even the stories of the two knights are dramatically different.

Nevertheless, Sandry's Book is an interesting coming of age story that sets the stage for the rest of the Circle of Magic quartet, which in turneads into The Circle Opens quartet.

I liked this book, but it was not brilliant. The story is relatively simple, a bit childish I'd say, but entertaining.

Not super believable in the interpersonal relationships sometimes but it's fantasy so whatever.

I will admit I struggled with this read. I did not love the pacing in this book and I did not feel super connected to the characters. I wanted to love this book. I also only felt connected to one character and all the new characters overwhelmed me. I did like the "teaching aspects" of this read. I just did not love the pacing and wish the story grabbed my attention more. I def want to keep reading this series in the future.

I really enjoyed this end to this series. I love the illness focus in this book and also how this book tied all the others characters stories together. I found this book to be a super fast pace read. I really loved being inside Briar head. I thought this book had a nice balance between adventure, heart and tension. I felt that the stakes were super high in this book and I really loved it. I want to read the sequel series soon.

I really liked this book. I really enjoy the audio books in this series. I sometimes get lost in the details at points. I really enjoyed not only the plot but also the characters various paths in this story. It was a much quicker read this time. I loved the focus on tris and also how the mages grew as friends. I did not see the twists towards the end of the book coming. I am excited to start book 3 :)

I wish i would have physically read the first book in this series because some of the world building flew over my head. But i really did love all of these characters so much. I def became super invested towards the end of the book. I can't wait to learn more about this characters. I really can't choose a favorite character but I loved the interaconnections between the lead characters. I loved the world alot and hope the next books expand on it!

I really loved this book alot. Beka is one of my favorite heroines on the whole world. I thought this book was very well plotted with some elements that had me yelling at my audiobook. I loved the slow burn of a romance development. I missed most of the characters we saw the last two books because we were in a different location. I love the tie back to the first book in the series. Very nice ending to the whole series!

I enjoyed this book. The story became less predicable for me and also included topics like sex that i loved seeing in this type of book. I love how even thought she is hiding she is a girl it had such a limited impact on the story.
