The basic premise is a sound one, THE DIET ASPECT IS GREAT IN MANY RESPECTS, & yet, the info in the book itself could have been put into a book75% smaller, & it looks like an advert for many foods that are simply NOT available in countries other than USA...
No mention of DMSO, pH of the blood, nor of foods that for centuries have been known as useful for basic good health, blood cleansing & thinning et al, nor any mention of pH values...
I have been basically vegetarian since 1968 & most of the book is just padding, & a waste of trees..
No mention the book was made from recycled or bamboo paper!
And, looking at the type set & book layout, the book is designed for old folks &.. a lot of basic Common Sense was shared...(well done for that, as Common Sense does not seem to be very common in 2023, does it!?)…
And, NOTES are a joke or an after thought somehow???... Well, with NOTES, no ENDNOTE indicators on the pages involved are present (as we first read it), thus no indicator that a ENDNOTE actually exists, is there? As we find out later on that ENDNOTES do exist & THEN we have to SEARCH TO find the ENDNOTE lines indicated (most odd, never seen that before)? !
And, just under HALF the book is recipes etc, with the addition of Appendix B as an advert for Food Brands to stock the house with, ...{ which made me feel that it was a PAID COMMERCIAL site}?
So, overall, I found some useful info that could have been shared in 30 pages or so, and the rest of the 506 pages was padding to make the publishers & gullible public happy at the $49.90 Australia$ price tag...
Life hey! ✔️

The guru of reversing heart disease (who recently got Medicare and insurance companies to cover his programs) is back, saying that the origin of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and even aging itself can be reversed with the same formula:

(1) Eat well [he continues to be a proponent of low-fat vegan]

(2) Move more [moderate daily exercise]

(3) Stress less [or de-stress more with meditation and other practices]

and

(4) Love more [as it sets in motion a cascade of biochemical reactions that renews the body].

I am switching over to this diet, since I am concerned about the effect of the American diet on my health. I am hoping that the diet can help undue some of the damage done by eating meat, dairy, etc. While I realize everyone eventually dies of something, I am not interested in diabetes, heart disease, dementia, and stroke. Since others have done this, I can too. I had thought that eating meat was part of the hunter gatherer’s diet but they typically had short lifespans. I have not put a lot of effort into stress management and I believing that I am making a mistake. The pandemic has caused a lot of isolation and this is not beneficial either. Getting older is scary but I hope going vegan will delay my eventual death and debilitation leading up to death.

Ornish begins with some scary statistics. Forty million Americans have been *diagnosed* with cardiovascular disease. Obviously there are many more who don’t even know they have it. Sixty million people have high blood pressure. Eighty million people have elevated cholesterol levels. And over 1.5 million American shave heart attacks every year. These facts alone should be enough to scare you into reading this book.

Ornish and his colleagues found that medications for these conditions don’t always work. They believe that comprehensive lifestyle changes to lower stress levels, eat healthier, and exercise more, can, however, make a difference, and telling you how to do that forms the bulk of this book.

This book is divided into three parts. Part one gives an overview of research about how lifestyle factors affect heart disease, for better or worse. Part two is a “how-to” section for help not only in preventing heart disease but reversing it. Part three is a cookbook with over 150 recipes for healthy eating.

I highly recommend this book. Even if you just make partial changes based on your reading, it may help you live longer.

Well written and interesting. But maybe I've read too many of these types of books. Because they are starting to all look alike. Many ideas are common sense.

I believe in life style medicine, which is what Dr. Ornish offers in this book. I chose it over traditional medical practices whenever I can. I am a life long vegetarian part time vegan now so his diet choices are not far off from my daily diet. I have read his previous books but really enjoyed the way this one was set up with a quick start easy program. It is really so simple and written so clearly. There was a more personal touch feel to this book, with his wife's involvement. It really in complete with exercise suggestions and recipes. I will purchase a copy of this to give to my mother who goes to a Dr. that never tells her to change her lifestyle, he just gives her a new pill. Bravo Dr. Ornish I love how you set this one up.
Thank you to the publisher for gifting me a copy for an honest review

This is a very, very restricted diet, yet very much not a fad diet. It's actually backed by science, and Doctor Ornish actually is well known in the medical community for being able to reverse blockages to the heart using diet, instead of surgery or drugs. So this actually isn't snake oil, but rooted in science, and the focus of the diet isn't actually losing weight, but getting healthy. The down side? Well, this diet bans meat, poultry, fish and seafood--which may be fine for vegetarians, but hard on the rest of us. He also bans avocados and nuts and seeds--which would also be hard on vegetarians. And is arguably unnecessary, because as noted in a review of the diet on WebMD:

Frank Hu, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at the Harvard School of Public Health, is critical of how severely fat is limited on the diet. "The data from numerous studies show that it is the type of fat, rather than the total amount, which is related to cardiovascular health," he says. "Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated oils actually protect against cardiovascular incidents." For example, Hu says, Ornish advocates limiting the consumption of fish and nuts, and Hu adds, "There is strong evidence that the fat in them is protective against coronary heart disease in both epidemiological studies and clinical trials."

Translation--salmon and walnuts are good for you! Still, this is much, much healthier than most diets out there, it doesn't require calorie counting, and even if you decide not to rigidly follow it, this book offers tasty and healthy recipes for Appetizers, Salads, Soups, Main Courses and Side Dishes, Pasta, Pizza, Bread, Rice and other grain dishes and Desserts. So recommended, even if with a grain of the proverbial salt.½

I am so glad that I got this book. I find that there are a lot of recipes that I would have never thought of doing as a way of saving fat. I think this will help incorporate variety into the diet. Flavor has always been important to me so I like that he uses things like capers and high flavor seasonings. I love the shopping lists and specific brand names, it saves a lot of time. I am currently going through several different books with recipes and plans and trying to incorporate them to a full plan.

Vegetable Gumbo, p. 238, delightful blend, "Serves 4" means serves 12, could use a roux even if counterproductive and more salt/celery.

It's a bad idea to follow this diet. The body needs more protein and fat than he recommends. He's really just another animal activist in Dr.'s clothing. (Don't get me wrong. I am all for the ethical treatment of animals, but keep that bias out of my nutritional information.)
