The United States was very fortunate to have had waterways flowing west from the Great Lakes; it made it so much easier to travel.

Wonderful descrptions of the mythos of the old American West. The Canadian West was much more peacefully settled.

Early Americans who infiltrated the passes of the Aplpallachian Mountains to explore and settle the wilderness west to the Mississippi risked violent death from wild beasts, Indians, foreign armies and sometimes each other.
