Set during World War II, WAACs Pauline and Mary Ellen scan the waters of Galveston Bay from high up in the Bolivar Lighthouse. German U-Boats have attacked oil tankers despite several forts and an army airfield nearby. A sweet romance with handsome pilots is included along with suspense in this well-written historical. Customs of the times are part of the story and details about the local area. Reading it was a delight.

I know very little about Texas during the Civil War, but I thought this story handled the tough issues of those times well--lack of food, slavery, enemies, and mental illness. The Logan family remained true to their Christian values. They lived their faith and that was uplifting.

While the sweet romance of Margaret and Thomas is at the center of the story, all the other difficulties of the time impact their growing love. I really enjoyed this book!

North meets South in this Civil War tale of unexpected love. Margaret and her family are living on a peninsula, her father a lighthouse keeper at a post that no longer has a lighthouse. Having left their home in New Orleans, Margaret’s life is but a shadow of what it once was. She has lost not only her home but also her fiancé, killed in the war. Having no love nor respect for the North, she is stunned to find a sailor – a Yankee sailor – more dead than alive, washed up on the shore. Informing her parents, she is shocked when they bring him into their home and nurse him back to health. A dangerous situation, giving aid and comfort to the enemy, Margaret has nothing but contempt for this man. But gradually, she sees the man beneath the blue of his uniform, and comes to realize, Yankees are not so different from their southern brothers. He enlightens her about many things, and slowly, they start to plan a life together, a life which is thwarted by the betrayal of her younger sister. Just when it seems that Margaret will find love, happiness is again snatched from her. This intriguing Christian tale is captivating and entertaining, with its historical setting and complex characters. This well-written story will appeal to readers of romance, history, and Christian fiction.… (altro)
