Although the first edition of the book was completed in 1990, when the nature of the problems facing the world were different, Oates’ thesis regarding the underlying cause of social, economic, political and moral dysfunction remains the same: in a nutshell, while we allow ourselves to be guided by competitive material instincts, conflict and disharmony will always ensue.
