This book tells the story of Mukahepo, a woman who went into exile with SWAPO during the Namibian struggle for independence. Recounting the harrowing fligth outside the country through Angola, where rebels were fighting a war, and on to a SWAPO camp. Mukahepo was the only woman on this journey. Largely illiterate but incredibly resourceful, she ended up raising many children for others who went away to schools in order to become educated future-leaders. While the beginning was a bit dry tracing heritage, the story itself was fascinating. I'm sure reading it while I was traveling north through Namibia and even through the author's hometown made my connection with the work stronger.… (altro)
