Fifty Years of Re-creating the Middle Ages: A… di Steven Muhlberger
A brief overview of the history of the SCA, prepared for the 50-year celebration last year, by a professional historian and member of the group. Very even-handed, addressing how the group began, how it expanded, what kind of people are likely to be interested, and how it has changed over time. Recommended for those who play in the SCA, and those who want to know why some things are as they are.
Useful translation of sources for several major jousts in England and France including jousts at St. Denis, 1389, joust for Queen Isabeau's entry into Paris, 1389, Jousts at St. Inglevert, 1390 (French vs. English), Jousts at Smithfield near London 1390; of interest to me chiefly for the St. Inglevert joust . Besides accounts from the chronicles and Froissart, this includes poetic invitations to the 2 French jousts by the court poet Eustache Deschamps. This book is useful to me for the material related to Richard II's courtiers notably John Holland, earl of Huntingdon.
Steve Muhlberger (Duke Finnvarr de Taahe) is as veteran SCA warrior who defeated me in an Easty Kingdom Crown final in 1973. He also holds a Ph.D. in medieval studies from Toronto and has spent most of his teaching career in Ontario.
He was originally a specialist in late ancient prosopography but in later years has moved into late medieval military/chivalric history… (altro)
