A bold, experimental character study that combines aesthetic purity with uncommon insight into the life of this misunderstood legend. Director Schnack (a former Columbian and MU graduate) eschews easy conventions of pop biography to paint a complicated and revealing portrait of Kurt in his own words. Schnack draws upon 25 hours of never-before-heard interviews (conducted by writer Michael Azzerad), mixing Kurt's narration with breathtaking footage of his formative environments. These dreamlike visuals are expansive, but also tied concretely to the narrative. A soundtrack by Ben Gibbard (Death Cab) and Steve Fisk (producer of Nirvana and other northwest bands) mixes a haunting original score with snatches of songs from bands that Kurt liked such as the Melvins, Big Black, and the Raincoats. Kurt's words, the visuals and the music create a complete package, tell his heartbreaking story with more emotion and effect than ever before. (DW)
