What is Electricity? is an informational book that explains many characteristics and applications of electricity. I like this book for three reasons. First, I really like how the text is supplemented with pictures, illustrations, “Flash facts”, and activities that support each topic explained. I particularly like an activity in the What is Current Electricity? chapter that explains how to illuminate a single, small, Christmas tree light using a lemon as a battery. Also, I like how the author has broken down all of the topics into small, two page chapters, which helps keep the writing simple and appropriate for the intended audience. The chapter entitled Who Made Electrical Discoveries?, for example, is limited to nine major inventors and discoverers with a sentence or two on each. Finally, I like how the figures of technical information are clearly labeled, adding to the reader’s understanding of the concepts being discussed. This is evident in the section How Do Batteries Work? An illustration of a battery illuminating a light bulb shows the battery’s parts, as well as the flow of electrons through the wires leading to and from the light bulb.… (altro)
