This guide to each state's official state bird, flower, and insect, along with other fun facts, is indispensable for the upper-elementary grades. Including biographical sketches of famous Americans, inventions, resources, and records, this book is unique because of its inclusion of endangered species and personal approach to the subject matter.

I think this is an excellent resource for the classroom. It has vibrant pictures and maps for students to look at and learn about each individual state. It starts with a map of the US and then breaks it down, and page by page, gives characteristics of each state. I also like how the information is presented. Instead of the traditional paragraph form, the information is put into bullets, captions, and labels. There are pictures and a brief description of how they relate to the state that page represents. I also like how the states are presented in alphabetical order. This makes it easy for students to find a certain state. In the last couple pages of the book, it had pictures of all of the state flags and an index of landmarks, presidents, geographical locations and a lot of other characteristics that will give you the page number of the state it corresponds with.

This is a nifty pocket reference guide on native plants and beasts in the Great Basin, Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan deserts. I'm still a relative newcomer to the Sonoran desert, and I want to identify more things I see in my desert walks. This is a very pretty book with watercolored illustrations and hand-written text and descriptions. It's not the handiest of references if one is in a hurry; there is no real order on the listings, so unless you know the exact name to check in the index, you'd have to flip through and try to recognize it in a picture. Still, I love the artwork and the information is good, too. The back even has a listing of tracks and scat identifications for animals.
