Way darker than I was expecting but really really good nonetheless.

I picked this up around the time that last Wolverine movie came out because it was supposed to have some of X-23’s storyline in it. She isn’t in this issue. The story itself isn’t terrible but it’s not that great either. The characters so far seem shallow and cliche. They’re all throw-aways.

It was a surprise for me to read something that was not X-Men, but this book is amazing. The art is solid and the text was really mature. Some really awesome characters ever, Kidden and Laura being my favorites. A must read. Mutants with no real conection with the X-Men for adults.

Not really bad, but a bit incomplete and incoherent as a volume. Too much "slice of life" flitting about, not enough story and plot.

A very different kind of mutant superhero story, with empowered female leads, a diverse cast, and the visceral backdrop of New York City's most run-down sectors. I was quite engaged in each of the characters stories and personalities, but perhaps due to its 7-issue limited run, a lot of potential left unexplored.

A particularly well-written book by Judd Winick about the "first meeting" of Superman and Captain Marvel, both at an early stage of their careers. The superheroing action is fairly standard; what makes this book special is the interaction between the two heroes, and the extent to which Winick allows the fact that Captain Marvel is actually ten-year-old Billy Batson to color his personality. I've never been much taken with Captain Marvel before, perhaps because most writers seemed to treat these two aspects of his being separately. But he is one person, and Winick does a better job than I've seen before of showing the hero-worshipping naivete of the ten-year-old in the superhero. The ending pages, when Superman learns Captain Marvel's secret and makes a generous decision with regard to Billy Batson, truly touched me. The artwork seems to also harken back to an earlier age, as is appropriate here.½

A lightweight but perfectly enjoyable superhero tale of two classic characters meeting for the first time. The art is gorgeous, complementing the unpretentious, fun story, with a surprisingly touching ending.
