Jim Metcalf's writing was more like musical prose. I had the joy of hearing him speak it thirty-some years ago when he had a weekly program called "A Sunday Journal" on local television in the late great City of New Orleans. His voice still echoes in my head as I read my vintage copy of this book. Many of the selections were poignant then--they are heart-wrenching now, particularly "Bourbon Street at Dusk" "Windows" and the antedeluvian "New Orleans". Read 'em and weep.
