If you ever wanted to know the lot of a British rat catcher circa the end of the 19th century then this is the book for you.

Ike Matthews gives a candid and honest account of the trials and pleasures, freedoms and constraints that accompany the job of rat catching in that time and place.

Modern medical professionals may cringe at his suggestions for treatment of infection, while PETA activists gnash their teeth in response to his views on humane animal treatment. But aside from these details he certainly seems to know his stuff, particularly when it comes the habits and habitats of rodents.

I wouldn't say this is a gripping read, but the author's down to earth style makes it a comfortable book to come back to.
