Moshe Maltz (1902–1993)

This is a hell of a story and I do wish this book had wider readership; Chaim Aron Kaplan and Abraham Lewin have nothing on Moshe Maltz. He kept a diary/chronicle throughout the war and in the months after liberation, writing about food shortages and bribery as well as the murder of his fourteen-month-old daughter in the same dispassionate tone. He and fourteen others, including his wife and son, survived the war by hiding in the pigsty of a positively angelic Polish woman who provided them with food and safety until the Russians arrived.

A couple of years ago they made a documentary, No 4. Street of Our Lady, about Moshe Maltz and the others in the pigsty. It won several awards and more importantly, it's available on Netflix.… (altro)
