I couldn't recommend this more highly as a place to start for beginners who want something that looks good right now!

Another interesting pattern book from Malcolm, this has the usual Vogue good pix, clear instructions, some interesting designs, and clever construction techniques. Also thoughtfully offers yarn options, something all pattern books ought to, but don't always, do.

Good stuff, as are most Vogue books, but they also tend to not offer much in the way of size ranges, alas. This one isn't bad in that respect, but although I liked several patterns rather a lot, I was unable to actively consider making them up due to limited pattern ranges, hence my lowish rating. I'm willing to try and update a pattern a couple of sizes, but when it's listed as 42" for the largest size and I want a 54".... (I prefer things very loose)! The general run of pattern sizes here is about 42" for the largest, although several are meant to be oversized and made-up measurements were ~50", so they might work for some folks' inclinations.

Worth a good look.

Lovely set of patterns. Patterns are in the back though and some times, you find the picture and then have problems finding the pattern. And some of the neat designs are in ads, that you then have to go an buy the pattern from a website.

I just got a used copy in the mail from Paperback Swap, and I'm glad I didn't pay for it, because there are only a few styles I would make. This is for people who like their knitwear oversized½

This book is a real disappointment. The subtitle is "Classic knits from the 1930s-1960s" so you can expect some conservatism, but what you get aren't old patterns rewritten to modern standards; you get patterns that may be "slightly altered to give a more modern fit". Which means the most interesting patterns have modern lines and don't represent the styles of the mid-twentieth century.

Most (but not all) of the garments have the original photograph that appeared when the pattern was first published, so you can often see what was changed. Each pattern is written in the modern Vogue Knitting style so you know what to expect, and each has been updated to reflect modern sizing. You get about four sizes, so the very small and the very large are SOOL.

About half the patterns are for women, five are for men, seven are for babies or children, and the rest are wraps, socks, and gloves. Difficulty ranges from very easy to intermediate.

These are good patterns, but look elsewhere for styles that represent days gone by.

This is a wonderful little series of books. They are nearly pocket-sized and they have the cutest little patterns with clear instructions. They manage to be both visual candy and useful at the same time. Of course, they are out of print and impossible to find. Highlights of this particular book a darling "lace" baby sweater and little matching booties. They also have a pattern for red and white plaid slippers, a turtleneck sweater made wtih two strands held together.

This is an admirable book on the basics of crocheting. The pictures explaining the stitches are unusually clear and the explanations are well written. There are also sections on yarns, hooks, finishing and care, as well as very useful descriptions of various accessories that are available. One cavil - the author recommends using safety pins as stitch markers. I don't like regular metal safety pins as the thread often gets caught in the spring - at least make sure that you are using non-rusting pins! Better still, there are plastic safety pins that don't have a spring.

There are patterns featuring different types of crochet: granny squares, flowers, circular.

Probably not for the experienced crocheter, but excellent for the beginner, or those of us who need a refresher from time to time.

The patterns in this book are beautiful. The ratings on skill level for the patterns seem to be pretty right on. My only problem with pattern books, and this one seems to be no exception is that the yarn that is used in the patterns is either difficult to find, or way to expensive. I know how to substitute but it would be nice to have a pattern book that used yarns that the average knitter or crocheter can easily and affordable obtain.

The patterns are great and easy to understand. The afghans tend to be featured in somewhat dull colors.

While the patterns aren't very easy, they would class as easy. It's all jumpers/sweaters/cardigans, most of which are designed for women. Some are quite dated, but often fashion does turn around again, while others are pretty timeless.

The patterns are lovely and often quite sophisticated, but as often with Vogue most are quite advanced. The cover sweater, for instance, uses extensive Fair Isle work but is knit back and forth rather than in the round. Many other patterns use similar complicated techniques. Expensive luxury yarns are also the norm here even though all the garments are for infants. Still, if you are willing to put the time and money in and are a serious enough knitter to do so successfully, you should have some lovely results.
