The title is misleading as it sounds like a set of Confucian style sayings and philosophies but it is basically an autobiographical work. There is a very brief section about his childhood but it is mainly about Madden’s career at Essendon, and then Carlton, with some sections about the AFL Players Association of which Madden was an active member.

A giant ruckman who played over 300 AFL games, mostly with Carlton, provides stories, recollections and opinions about his own career and many aspects of football. The style is laconic, witty and self-deprecatory. Topics include training, injuries, grounds, players, staff and trainers and the social life of footballers. Despite its light and entertaining tone Madden depicts AFL football as an emotional environment that demands high expectations with little room for sentiment (and fuels ruthless behaviour). Madden also speculates on a political career for himself but rules it out which is interesting because by 1999 he was a member of the Victorian Parliament and a minister in the Bracks Victorian State government.… (altro)
