Very depressing book, as I had greatly enjoyed some of Hendrik van Oon's works, and was disapponted to learn he deserted his wife and young children (incluiding Gerard) and got involved with two other women, one of whom he eventually abandoned in favor of the other, who turned out to be an alcoholic. I suppose it is not fair to give this book 2 stars because it disillusioned me, but that is the way I feel.
A story of a particularly interesting man. Written by his son.

That being said, I enjoyed learning more about one of my favorite authors/illustrators. The Germanic sentence structure of Gerard's writing was rather laborious at times, but considering his schooling, it might be expected. I did feel like I was back in college trying to find the darn verb hidden in all of those German independent, subordinate, compound and complex clauses that the language is so fond of.… (altro)
