In this fable about the dynamics of social inequality you see characters grow, rot, harden, and come to terms with how fluid their positions can be if they are willing to make the tougher choices. The pacing problems from the last two books have all but disappeared and what is left is a much more focused and human story. Sure, some lingering annoyances like introducing creatures through vague metaphor still remain. "Laaks" What the hell are those? (My best guess is a rodent of some kind.) Still, coming from someone with an interest in understanding the ninth world with only the novellas as a guide, this is far and away the most accessible of the three.

Felix and Gotrek slaying undeads over 300 pages. Yes, that`s (almost) the whole book. And yes, still a very good one.½

Bloodborn is actually the book that encouraged me to write my first novel, particularly as the main character is a vampire. I thought the concept was a good one. Nathan long has a lot of experience in this area, and the writing is very well done. You instantly connect with Ulrika and are keen to follow her through her often unwilling adventures.

The story, half mystery half adventure, is very interesting and holds you from beginning to end. However, my two critism's would be that sometimes the narrative feels a bit strung out in parts, not quite flowing as it should. Secondly, whilst the stories epic climax is exciting it's final ending it very disappointing and the follow on story did not correct this disappointment.

But, if you like Vampire's and are into the Warhammer Fantasy background, this is a good story.

Felix and Gotrek against the dark elves? Sounds good? And it is. The duo knows not impossible saves the wold from the dark evil again and it's highly entertaining.

I think this book was actually better than book one. There was much less sense of Action A leading to Result A and Action B leading to Result B formula, and more sense of plot and storyline.

The characters are the same, and maybe Jane wasn't quite as funny this time, or as rough-and-tumble... it is almost like the author tamed Jane down a bit. The romance that 'caused' this book to take place at all actually gets developed a bit throughout the story; so, while at the beginning you might wonder at Jane's choice to go back to Waar, by the end it makes more sense.

There is a bit more science fiction here (as oppposed to the fantasy novel feel of book one) and I think there might still be room to carry on this series (i.e. who created this world in the first place). I would read it anyway.½

Being the only Warhammer audiobook ever publish I thought it was a good story even if I don't appreciate audiobooks.

In this book we follow the duo through their adventures. This book should have been read after Elfslayer but if not there is no foul in it. There are references from the book and also minor characters.

From the brawl in a tavern, to the war in the marshes and the dock of Marienburg it's full of fight. It was nice to see (hear) the increasing of reading of Danny Webb in the fight scenes. It was also nice to see a distinguish of Gotrek and Felix voices as well as other characters.

This novel we see Gotrek battle Cthullhu I mean the herald of Stromfels, the god of the hazards of the see. Well to be precise he is not a new god but an aspect of Manaan the god of the great rivers and seas. But revered as different deities. (Of course Stromfels cult it's prohibited due to dark side inherited).

I really enjoy the battles scenes and the plot. There is some elements of humor in it. Mainly from the people being sacrificied.

Nevertheless a solid reading and plot.

Reccommend to anyone who enjoys Gotrek and Felix or just wants to hear 90m of battles and black humor.

This was the companion book of the new box set of warhammer fantasy. I bought the gameboard and the novel. I already painted some goblins but I am not that good at painting... Should try more.. maybe on this holidays...

Well on this novel we see the fighting between the dwarves against goblins. Here we have on one sight a Dwarven Thane trying to recover the Pass and make a house of them own. In the other we have a goblin who's trying to become a big chief (he had a cool name like Earscrapper). The narrative switchs between the dwarves and the goblins point of view. Nathan Long has done nicely for a greenskin perspective and I think it could be done on a larger scale like a full lenght novel. How cool would be to read a novel about a Orc Champion or such thing.

We are presented as I said with both sides and we learn about Goblin and Dwarven societies and their armies. This is a propaganda book and you could reanact with the miniatures. The end was a good ending and even if one side did win (the dwarves), they are so fragile than another incursion of the greenskins would surely repel them from the new achieved home. That's what so great... A typic warhammer ending.

Nicely done Herr Long.

haha... what a pleasant surprise! I haven't read Burrough's book, of which, apparently, this story is reminiscent. I don't know that I will now either - I really like the female main character and am pretty sure that if there was a male character acting and talking the way Jane does, it would drive me nuts. Sexism and women as objects is much more acceptable when it is turned on its head. Jane being the way she is mocks all those stories where the woman is there just to be rescued and as a sexual prize.

And the story is funny! Of course the setting and characters are a little on the thin side...but it is a pulp sci-fi story after all.

It was a bit formulaic in the plotting: character goes to A, does X, then to B and does Y, etc... but the humor and the freshness of Jane's non-feminine and yet still female attitudes more than made up for any sense of writing 101. There was just a tiny bit of moralizing - mostly to do with gender stereotypes - which was more entertaining than lecture-y. I bought the next book too.

Dark, gloomy, gothic fantasy - predictable as hell, but competently-written and action-packed. I am a little afraid the series will never actually end, because I'm only in it for the ending at this point.

More totally fine gothic fantasy - nothing hugely earthshaking, but some nice depictions of the way people behave under stress and an ending that avoided the cliche I thought inevitable.

Perfectly workmanlike dark fantasy hack-and-slash. A couple of really nice moments, like the handling of the dwarf slaves. And finally at least of mention of what will finally bring the unstoppable Gotrek down. It's odd to have a main character actively trying to get killed; it's odder to be cheering him on. But it works well enough that I keep reading them.

Felix and Gotrek are back to stop a conspiracy of evil and chaos which intend to destroy not just a city but the entire Empire. And because killing chaos-cultists is happen to be the favourite hobby of the red mohawk-haired dwarf, this adventure is as fun as the others.... :)

This is a modern update to A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The twist is instead of John Carter going to Mars we get Jane Carver going to Waar. Jane is a biker chick who accidentally kills a man who tries to take advantage of her. While on the run from the police, she discovers a cave with a glowing stone that transports her to the planet Waar. She does her best to adapt to her situation as only she can. A fun, fast read that captures the feel of the pulp classic it is inspired by. And yes, there is a sequel!

Interesting. Very much in Burroughs style - enough to make me want to read some John Carter, to see just how close it is. Slightly uneven - Jane keeps obsessing about sex and her looks in a way that's very much male gaze, then she snaps back and feels like a woman again (I'm thinking particularly of the time in the gladiator stable, when she thinks how she misses cuddling). The characters are a bit sketchy, though they fill out a bit - become more than a collection of quirks - by the last few chapters. And one thing that's _very_ like John Carter - Jane spends the whole book working on getting home (with lots of side-quests on the way). At the end, she finally realizes she'd rather stay - for adventure and love and a better life than she has on Earth - at which point she's shanghaied back to Earth! Which, just like John Carter, sets up for the sequel - which is out, and which I want to read. I don't think Jane will ever be a favorite, but worth reading and likely worth rereading.½

This time Gotrek helps with his friend Felix to his kinsmen to liberate an orc ridden dwarf city. But these orcs are very strange.... they seem to be very oraganized and disciplined. As usual the mystery behind it could destroy the world (or something like that). The usual portion of blood and gore and fun.....

More Gotrek & Felix. Not the best, or the worst. A direct continuation of Shamanslayer.

400 pages of violence directed at Zombies and their Necromancer Master.

I'm sure there will be more coming.

3.75 Stars½

Bloodborn, is a Warhammer Fantasy novel, and a spin off from the popular 'Gotrek and Felix' series.

Ulrika was one of Felixes several loves. The daughter of a Kislevite Boyar, she ended up being vamped. Likely this is the first of a new series featuring her as a primary character.

Nathan Long has written a number of Gotrek and Felix novels in addition to several other well thought of Warhammer fantasy titles.

Good pacing, reliable plotting, and more depth than many Warhammer titles. This vampire mystery deserves it's 4 Star rating.

If you haven't read any Gotrek and Felix novels, read those first, although it can be read as a stand alone.
