The fresh and the salt : the story of the Solway di Ann Lingard
A wide, mixed and interesting range of topics concerning the Solway Firth. The people and their activities -- miners, fishermen, peat cutters, farmers, prehistoric residents -- interested me most. There is a great deal on mud dwelling marine organisms, which dominates the narrative, but I would have liked more information about visible features that visitors always ask about, such as the Anthorn naval radio station.
If you know the Solway Firth well you will love this book. If you don't know it at all you will want to visit its shores in Cumbria and Scotland. Ann Lingard introduces readers to the invertebrates that live in the mud and salt marshes, the ships that use the Solway, the people who fish and shoot here, ideas for tidal barrages, the rocks and the changing shape of the mud and sands. The book is comprehensive in its scope, Ann Lingard is knowledgeable and talks to people who know and it is also beautifully written. I learnt so much about the Solway from this book and now it is time to return.… (altro)
