- Nicknamed "The Cracker" he was convicted in 1984 of breaking into various computer systems including GTE Telemail. He was placed on 3 years' probation, and wrote his one book, "Out of the Inner Circle" which was published by Microsoft Press. He disappeared without completing his probationary period, and was arrested in 1989 in San Diego, where he was living on the street. His current whereabouts are unknown. (ref. Out of the inner circle : the true story of a… di Bill Landreth
The book is ok, but Landreth's life story is more interesting. Never one for following rules, he was busted for hacking and required to go around to companies to educate them on security. Sometime in the nineties the LA Times wrote an article on him, and he was living homeless in Southern California. I often wonder if he's still alive.
