The IBD Healing Plan and Recipe Book is an indispensable reference for anyone suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or any number of other digestive disorders that require adjustments to diet in order to avoid severe digestive distress. Author Christie Korth provides a detailed analysis of the various aspects of managing digestive disorders as well as a full spectrum of tempting recipes. The recipe section is easy to access, with edge-highlighting to differentiate those pages from the expository and reference matter.

In the first section of the book, readers will find information on the signs and symptoms of various digestive disorders, ways to determine food intolerances, and descriptions of the types of treatments available. Korth also provides a practical plan for identifying and eliminating problem foods and adjusting diet and health regimens to eliminate flare-ups. The 112-page recipe section includes new takes on old (and problematic) favourites as well as creative new dishes to tempt reluctant palates into trying new foods. The book closes with a full list of excellent resources for testing, supplementation, and homeopathic remedies. The Notes section is extremely useful, with its exhaustive list of written references for more in-depth reading.

Most compelling are the author’s anecdotes about her own battle with, and eventual victory over, her IBD. This book should be on the shelf of every person who suffers with, or who lives with someone who suffers with, IBD.

I won this book in January's giveaway. I read it very slowly due to my crazy schedule but I liked it. The author talks about her own experiences with Crohn's and the book went beyond my expectations. It is very informative and handles the topic very well.

I entered the give-away for this book thinking it would be a good one to read with my husband. We thought he might have IBD for a while. Turns out it was Celiacs instead, be that as it may, much of the book was still helpful to us. A lot of the information was just as pertinent. I appreciated the ease of organisation and general mindset of the book. In the beginning having recipes was a big help. As we became more accustomed to his new restrictions we needed them less and less, but it's nice to have a strong recipe base to work from. I recommend the book for those who are just beginning their nutritional journey or looking to spice up an established routine. Thank you for the opportunity to read it.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is no laughing matter to the people suffering with this disorder and this book gives the reader information on how to determine which foods may cause problems and how to avoid them. Although this book includes dozens of great recipes and beverages it is more than a regular cook book. It asks important questions and gives the reader tips and suggestions on living and feeling better. I found the book to be helpful.

I like how this book is organized, first she talks about what IBD is, and what conventional and holistic treatments are available, Then she counsels on how to identify your food triggers. I appreciate that she included a section on supplements, not all books of this type do that. She has a lengthy section on recipes, and I really like the recipes because they are simple yet very flavorful½

As someone who has recently been diagnosed with IBS, I figured this book could offer some helpful hints on how to deal with my issues. I was correct. I found this book to be extremely helpful. I enjoyed many of the recipes and the nutritionist who wrote this book seems to really know her stuff. I got some great ideas on how to prepare food in order to keep my stomach calm. Her medical advice is interesting, but I trust my doctor to let me know what I should and should not take in order to fix my stomach. I feel that in the implication that herbs work better than what doctors prescribe, the author may have been overstepping her bounds. People tend to take anything that's written down as the absolute truth, and people also misinterpret a lot of what they read. Many people could take her advice much too literally and stop taking their medicines. While the book does state that its not trying to go against doctors orders or give medical advice, I have a feeling that it will be read as medical advice anyway. So my advice for this book is to take the medical stuff with a grain of salt and enjoy the healthy recipes.

I was very excited to see that I was going to receive the IBD Healing Plan and recipe book by Christie A. Korth. I was hoping that it would not be another book with little or no information that you could use. I started reading the book and was amazed at all the stories and information, especially the section on supplements to help control some of the gut-wrenching pain you will have sometimes. I followed the food allergy section and began to see a difference. It's almost like taking your life back in your own hands. This is a book that I will be turning to time and time again. The recipes are wonderful and delicious. Anyone with this disease of if you know of someone suffering from IBD I would recommend reading this book. It doesn't give you a cure but it does help you have a better outlook on this disease and a way to try and manage it.

I went into this book with pretty low expectations--I expected the same advice my doctor has been giving me for years. This book blew past my expectations, and has completely changed the way I eat. Korth speaks with a voice of experience that the reader can relate to; she is not just a medical professional spouting advice, she is someone who has lived through Crohns and understands what it is like. As I was reading, I found pictures of myself in each chapter. The author gives detailed explanations of different ways to treat IBD with whole foods, and backs them up with dozens of recipes in the back of the book. Although this book is geared at readers with the most severe forms of IBD, I found it extremely helpful as a moderate IBS sufferer. I have already purchased two more copies to give to family members whom I think would benefit from the book.

I was happy to receive this book as an early review. Ironically, a few days after receiving it, my daughter-in-law was relating to me about the many problems that she was having with the food she was eating. So, she had pretty much stopped eating! I was horrified, and told her that after I was finished reading this book, I would pass it on to her. I am sure the recipes will be a great help to her, but learning about IBS and other related illnesses, will be just as important. So far, the book has been very informative, and it couldn't have come at a better time!

Easy, quick read with a lot of great points and ideas. I liked the fact that this book seemed to focus more on the healing side of IBD rather than just "treating the symptoms" Although I personally do not suffer from IBD, I know several people that do and it really gave me a better understanding of it. It also gave me some great ideas for recipes that I want to try, mainly from a whole foods state of mind. There were however many of the recipes that called for ingredients that I am sure can only be found in specialty stores, making shopping even more of an adventure!

The IBD Healing Plan by Christie Korth was an interesting and fairly quick read. I do not have IBD, so I can't vouch for the effectiveness of her plan, but it sounds very plausible. The quizzes were thought provoking and I think I may practice an elimination diet to test for food intolerance. I have been reading more about nutrition subjects and found many of the ideas in this book worth studying more in depth. The use of the word regime when regimen should have been used was rather irritating, but I am not an editor.

Review based on ARC.

As I was reading the book (very quickly), I kept changing who I wanted to give it to next. I do not personally suffer from IBD (at least, not as far as I know), but I have very close friends and family who do, and I thought that any book that seeks to use whole foods to relieve inflammatory issues in the body would be helpful to all.

Korth wrote a very accessible and relatable book. You do not have to have IBD to gain from the book. I thought that her approach was encouraging and informative. She gave a lot of information, but not so much that the reader felt weighed down. I understand that some people who DO suffer from IBD are seeking more information, but I feel like the references provided by Korth (at the end of the book and throughout) are excellent sources for that additional information. I personally appreciated that Korth did not feel the need to expound in great detail about every aspect that she discussed.

The case histories with which she began each section were not my favorite part, but I could see that they would be encouraging to those suffering from IBD.

Overall, I think the book is an excellent resource, a great starting point, and an important perspective to health in general. ALL of us can benefit from decreasing inflammatory substances, and NONE of us wants to encourage IBD issues in our lives. I also really appreciated the substantial recipe section in the book and am looking forward to trying all of them!

Oh, and I'm passing the book onto my friend who suffers from severe IBD, largely in the form of ulcerative colitis, who has been looking for a whole foods and natural approach for years. And I'll buy a new copy of the book for the recipes in the back... ;)

Let me open with the fact that I have Crohn's disease and have been diagnosed for 11 years at this writing. After diagnosis, I researched and read everything I could find on my disease in order to learn how to manage it and to learn about it. Therefore, I feel that I am fairly knowledgeable about the subject and can give a fair review of this book. The subtitle of the book is Using Whole Foods to Relieve Crohn's Disease and Colitis. Christie Korth believes that food intolerances contribute to IBD. If by this she means that people with IBD can manage their symptoms and disease by identifying food tolerances, then I find this interesting. If she instead means that food intolerances were part of the CAUSE of IBD, I find this difficult to believe.

Chapters are organized well and a lot of information is given in the 140 or so pages of the book. She takes a holistic approach to managing IBD which is something that I haven't seen in other books about IBD. The advice is practical and interesting. The book covers basic information about IBD, food intolerance and IBD, Foods that can be problematic for IBD patients and foods that can help IBD patients. Nearly half of the book contains recipes and resources for the IBD sufferer. I would recommend this book to someone looking for more information on Crohn's and Colitis, but I would also recommend that any changes you might make in your diet be first discussed with your physician or GI doctor.

Korth is an IBD sufferer, health coach and holistic nutritionist. The book provides a brief overview of inflammatory bowel diseases, food intolerances, and various related topics such as common drugs used to treat the illnesses. The last section is filled with recipes using whole foods and mostly free of common allergens.

Korth’s passion for this topic clearly shines through and it’s easy to see she believes and practices what she preaches. She covers a lot of topics and gives some good basic information to help familiarize readers with the issues discussed. She also includes numerous charts and graphs with everything from anti-inflammatory lunch ideas to substitutions for common food allergens like eggs and corn. Last, but not least, I thought her section on food intolerances was probably the most thoroughly explained and detailed in the entire book.

The main problem I had with the book was the brevity of the information she provides. If I were her editor, I would have suggested she integrate her sources of information more into the text to better support her points instead of using so many case studies and personal experiences to make her case. In this sense, it is more of a plan than a traditional informative discussion of the topic. There are a lot of places where she provides few details, and I would not rely on this book as my only source of information if I were trying to learn more about IBD. Personally, I also would have preferred her to have started the book with the assumption that the reader were knowledgeable of the condition instead of spending a lot of time covering the basics such as "Inflammatory Bowel Disease 101" and medications.

Overall, it's not a bad book, just don't expect it to have all the answers or provide a really detailed plan. I would also recommend taking her basic advice about food intolerances and allergies and then seeking out a more traditional whole foods diet such as The Mediterranean Diet or The Paleo Diet. As another reviewer says, however, not everyone will respond the same to dietary changes and it's wise to check with your doctor before changing your diet.½

I received this book through LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program. As both a librarian and a sufferer of Crohn's Disease, I am always on the lookout for more information about Crohn's. This book seems like a very comprehensive write up of how to combat Crohn's and other IBDs using diet. While this works for some, it did not work for me. I tried managing my disease using only diet when I was first diagnosed and it only made me sicker. I don't think the author emphasizes enough that Crohn's and IBD is different for EVERYONE, and what works for some will not work for others. Diet changes will work extraordinarily well for some people, but will have little to no effect for others. Also, I think the title is slightly misleading - there is no cure for IBD, diet or otherwise. You can eliminate symptoms such as inflammation, but you will never be cured. If changing your diet works for you, the recipes in this book sound very tasty and the author sets out a plan that should be easy enough to follow. If changing your diet hasn't worked in the past, I doubt this book will be very helpful. And please remember, ALWAYS check with your doctor before changing your diet or treatment plan for Crohn's or IBD!

This is a terrible news turned around to success book. The author had Chron's disease and is a certified health coach and holistic nutritionist who was able to recover from her disease and help others. It's helpful to everyone in my opinion. At some point it's time to re-evaluate what you have been eating to determine what your dietary needs are. This book has suggestions for substitutions for your daily diet, recipes, advice, suggested websites and some really good tweaks if your not ready to take the plunge into the completely bowel friendly lifestyle.

The book is based on the principle. “You are What You Eat” and I certainly believe that our forefathers were right!

A note of caution: While physicians generally use the term IBD for chronic idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease that includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, the author uses it in much more expansive fashion to include any disorder with inflammation in the gut. The book focusses its holistic therapeutic approach more so on ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease as well as celiac disease. While the patients get good advice from physicians regarding medications, this book serves as an easy non-pharmacologic treatment complement to medical advice.

The author Christie Korth, who herself suffers from Crohn’s disease stresses that a holistic healing approach is much better than a solely pharmacologic strategy. Among other things, such an approach seeks to counter our day after day consumption of over-processed, prepackaged and fast foods of modern fast paced life that may contribute to causation and relapses of the disease. Best of all, patients don’t have to accept that. A well thought out dietary manipulation has potential to modulate the disease process. Patients can easily accomplish a healthy nutritious diet and lifestyle regimen without sacrificing taste and using too much time.

Chapter 1 of the book is titled “Inflammatory bowel disease 101”. Inflammatory bowel diseases are described as a family of chronic disorders. It provides a brief overview of IBD including colitis, Crohn’s disease and celiac disease in easy to understand terms. The author touches on the potential role of gastrointestinal bacteria and intestinal permeability or leaky gut in pathogenesis of IBD.

The book differentiates between each individual’s unique food allergies and food intolerances and highlights the importance of an individualized dietary plan for patients. One of the many helpful worksheets/quiz for readers includes Wheel of Digestive Health. This to help patient discern which areas of the life are “balanced” and which ones need a “tune-up’.

Ms Kork provides a variety of options of dietary manipulations to facilitate healing including consuming organic foods while describing tips to avoiding sugar that hurts. Highlights of the book include an anti-inflammatory diet menu in chapter #4 titled “Soothing foods for Intestines’. Healthy lunch ideas for those on the go are included as well.

Chapter #5 is solely devoted to establishing a supplement regime. I was delighted to see probiotics, a topic of my great interest to me covered well. She describes the potential benefits of probiotics, Why to try them, What to look for, and How to take them.

Another chapter (#6) is devoted to “Essential IBD Resources” and includes a menu planner, sample allergen-free menu, as well as listings of diagnostic laboratories and helpful health websites.
The author rounds out the book with a chapter titled, “Recipe Corner” covering over 100 pages of nutritious recipes that are sure to please any discriminating palate.

Finally, the author not only keeps the book interesting throughout in easy to understand language, she does not shy away from interspersing humor with the serious stuff as is indicated by a letter that a patient “Steven” wrote to a toilet paper manufacturer.
