Onder meer omdat ze minder vaak dan andere kinderen het initiatief nemen in het leggen van contacten met anderen, missen kinderen met autisme heel wat natuurlijke, belangrijke leermomenten (imiteren, oogcontact maken, emoties herkennen,…). Door de aandacht te richten op motivatie en de omgang met anderen pakt de Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) dit kernprobleem bij mensen met ASS aan. Zo leren zij andere deelvaardigheden ontwikkelen.
