Dtv-Atlas zur deutschen Sprache (one of the numerous and informative dtv-atlases) is an amazing general reference for the German language (in a handy and portable paperback). Covering themes from historical linguistics to the different German dialects and their vocabulary, this is an essential and usable reference manual, not only for students of linguistics, but for anyone interested in the German language, its history, forms etc. The only (and very minor) drawback is that the font size is incredibly small, but that is likely due to the fact that much linguistic information needed to be included in 256 pages. Highly recommended (but fluency in the German language is a must).½
