Lumbering, with the bulk of transportation from land to mill, was a major industry in Minnesota from about 1890 to about 1920, with a few survivors soldiering on past that date. Author King has provided a fairly detailed look at the logging railroads of Minnesota during that era. Over half of the book is a review of the railroads in the various regions of the state, from "The River Railroads" to "Red River Logging." The book is a splendid treat throughout, though missing is any sense that what was going on was, really, a rape -- the white pine was logged off, and the railroads moved on, to Florida and Oregon.… (altro)
