In this era of unparalleled partisanship, it was refreshing to read this bio of the Lion of the Senate, a man who mastered the art of reaching across the aisle to move forward legislation that benefited ordinary Americans. Learning about his relationships with the many presidents and House speakers he worked with was fascinating, as was reading about his personal losses and victories. Recommended, and not just for political junkies.

There' no questioning the influential and important role the Kennedy's have played in American History. So much has already been revealed about the wonderful contributions their work has brought to America, the tragedies they've had to endure, and sadly, the shortcomings they've fallen prey to. That being said, what I most enjoyed about this book, was hearing it from a Kennedy's point of view. In many ways it felt more like I was sitting down having a conversation with Ted,rather than reading his memoir. Ted reveals so many personal, intimate little details about the Kennedy's that I now see them in a different light. However,if there's one drawback to hearing the Kennedy story from a Kennedy; it's that the negative aspects of their lives are pretty much glossed over. To be fair, that's to be expected. Ted want to focus on the positive aspects of the Kennedy dynasty and that's just what he did. In very enjoyable and up lifting way !

First published in 2006, this book is now seriously out of date as the 2012 Republican Presidential primaries are taking place. Kennedy details many of the failings of the Bush presidency, blaming many of the current problems on Bush or the Republicans. Now that Obama is in office, the G.O.P. candidates are point out the same woes, but this time it's Obama or the Democrats fault. In this regard, it's just more of the same from our politicians, e.g., "the other guy is wrong", "I / my party can do better". but when they take office, it's more about STAYING in office than seeking compromise to accomplish something significant.
Also, reading this in 2011, with the economic problems the Country is facing, many of Teddy's programs would take huge amounts of money to fund, money no longer available as we try to limit our deficit spending.
All in all, the book is too far out of date to recommend at this time. Bush is gone, and Teddy has passed away. This book should suffer the same fate.

At times surprisingly candid autobiography. Assessment of his relationship with 10 US presidents is insightful and revealing.½

A very sweet book! Ted talks about growing up a Kennedy, the baby brother or Jack and Bobby. He suffered a lot of loss in his life but still kept his optimism and belief his country. He loved his parents- his mother especially. This book covers his whole life; with the theme of always loving to sail on the Atlantic near his family home. An easy read and very heart warming book.

Excellent
his parents took him to many historic places
Tutored while in Hospital — traveled often to Africa, India

The youngest of nine children born to Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, he came of age among siblings from whom much was expected. As a young man, he played a key role in the presidential campaign of his brother John F. Kennedy, recounted here in loving detail. In 1962 he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he began a fascinating political education and became a legislator.

A great story to integrate into history. Allows students to learn about people of the past in a cute creative way through a dog's perspective.

The memoir of Edward "Ted" Kennedy, released posthumously just after the third longest serving member of the senate passed away in the summer of 2009, it provides a personal look at Kennedy's relations with his family, his role in the senate, relations with other members of congress, and how he came to grips with the tragedies which befell four siblings and three nephews.

Great to read about the Kennedy family from a Kennedy. Ted Kennedy was one of the greatest figures of the last decade and it's a shame that there aren't more politicians like him.

I heart Ted Kennedy... so there wasn't much I didn't already know. I would have liked more anecdotes and less scenes of him walking on the beach letting his grief wash over him.

My Senator and Me is told in first person from Splash, Senator Kennedy's dog, point of view. Splash tells about how government works in Washington D.C. as Senator Kennedy tries to get a bill passed. It showed our country’s system of checks and balances in action. As Splash traverses through D.C, he passes famous landmarks and monuments. This book would be perfect for fourth graders who need to know the information contained with this book. It also contained a fun fact that I was unaware of which is that there is an underground train that senators can use to travel from the Senate Building to the Capitol. Who knew? The illustrations were beautiful. The illustrator used soft water colors, which held a caricature aspect that would appeal to children. There was a certain playfulness to the illustrations. Since Senator Kennedy has been a senator in Washington for decades, he is certainly an expert on D.C. and the way government work, especially pertaining to getting a bill passed through Congress. Therefore, I’d say he is an extremely credible author.

Splash is a very important dog and has a very important job. He is Senetor Ted Kennedy's best friend. He goes to work with the Senetor everyday and sometimes even helps him with important business manners.

This autobiography written by Ted Kennedy shortly before his death is an interesting read for those interested in the Kennedy clan. Fun stories about his childhood along with tales of his wives and children accompany many political antidotes. Glossed over are some topics that I wished would have been more forthcoming (Chappaquiddick) Many of his tales seemed filled with much bravado as if he was patting himself on the back for a job well done. Good read, but suggest to read with open eyes.

This was a wonderful memoir. Any student of history, regardless of their political position, should read this book. Ted Kennedy keeps you spellbound as he weaves his tale of life in the Kennedy family and life in politics. As you read the book, you get the feeling that the Senator is sitting across from you telling the story to you personally. This book navigates us through American politics and history through the last seventy-five years. An amazing recollection of memories from one of America's most enduring political figures.

If you admire Ted Kennedy for his devotion to our country, you will enjoy this lovely memoir. Yes, he had his faults, but he also had a lot to live up to and a lot of loss in his life. He found a way to not only survive but to continuosly and doggedly work for all of the people of this great country.

The Kennedy family story told very well, and it seems both familiar and brand-new. Recommended in audio, too.

Senator Ted Kennedy never reached the heights of the presidency, but reading through this wonderful memoir, is like doing a Forrest Gump through modern American history. It touches on McCarthy’s witch-hunts, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, Watergate, Reaganomics, the Iraq war, to the 2008 Democratic convention and those are just some of the attractions along his long, eventful life. Shortly after his death, in August of 2009, some of my friends, who are firmly on the right, called this man a scumbag, who had done nothing in his nearly 47 year senate run, of course I beg to differ. He was not perfect and had flaws like everyone else, but I think he served his country well and tagging along with him on memory row, was an absolute pleasure.½

True Compass did not feel like a recitation of historical facts. Unlike other political memoirs, it did not feel like a feast of ego. Reading this book was inspiring. It reminded me that there are (or at least there were) still good people out there fighting the good fight. It's the life story of a man who was born into privilege, but never forgot the old adage "to who much is given, much will be expected".½

Saw the family interviewed on Oprah. His wife, Victoria Reggie Kennedy and his son Ted Kennedy, Jr. described passages and events which made this book irresistable. He kept detailed notes of his entire life so that he could complete this memoir. The book begins with Ted as a child and his boarding schooldays, thru his papal first communion. College and his brothers are chapters which made me laugh and cry. He does not dwell on either assassination. You feel you are with him at each age as he describes his life. This book is so beautifully written. As I finished the book, I was at work, at lunch. People stopped to find out why I was crying. He died was all I could say. The book made him feel so alive. Not to be missed.
