When Elephant trod on Tricky Tortoise for the three hundred and thirty second time, Tortoise devised a cunning plan to teach Elephant a lesson.

This is the story of how Tricky Tortoise proves that brains are often better than strength or size.

This is delightful, and we love aardvarks and the artwork is amazing. But it's another kid's book where all the characters are male. Gotta change those pronouns up.

Relates how the animals of the world, once all a dull color, acquired their furs and spots and stripes and horns, and how Zebra's greedy appetite caused him to get his particular coloring.

Wasn't what I expected and seemed kind of mean, but more of a Just-so story a la Kipling.

This fits right in with great picture books and also myths and legends. Young students love to hear all about the greedy zebra and how he got his stripes!

In my opinion I think the author of The Greedy Zebra did a great job with the story of how the zebra got his stripes. She explains how his greed for all of the grass led to him having to settle for black fabric that did not fit him and ripped all across his big belly. The story begins with all the animals being dull to look at, “all the animals in the world were a dull, depressing color; no coats, no horns, no spots, and no stripes.” When they announced that there were beautiful things in the cave all of the animals ran to the cave. The greedy zebra did not because “He certainly wasn't going to give up a single mouthful for a silly old cave of any sort” he was too busy eating as much grass as possible to be bothered by getting a new coat. This led to him getting to the cave very late and getting nothing beautiful to wear leaving him with his stripes. The author did a great job at describing why the zebra did not get anything beautiful to wear and how the stripes came to be.
This illustrator of this book did a fantastic job, after having dull coats, the animals all received beautifully vivid furs and wonderful horns. The color is so rich, especially for the first animal the zebra sees, the antelope. “She was wearing the most glorious new coat. And horns!” Every single picture matched the main idea on each page of what the author wrote. They did a great job working together to create this story of the zebra getting his stripes, in a fun way that many ages will enjoy to read.

The story has a cute way of describing how it became that aardvarks ate termites. It was funny how mongoose was trying to disturb the aardvark so he would stop snoring and in every attempt, nothing worked. However, when his tree feel down, he discovers the termites. Since termites are up at night, the aardvark is up too at night and this allowed the other animals to be able to sleep without his snoring. Rather a cute story!
The artwork is done with watercolor and pencil. It does a great job at showing details while entailing daytime and evening.
