This heavy book is worth its weight in something quite valuable for anyone in Australia working with prospective immigrants, or migrant communities, refugees and folk who might be facing loss of citizenship, cancellation of visas and deportation. Lawyers might find its English too plain, but the latest edition (at any particular moment) will refer you to the latest legislation and case law. The text is broken down along situational lines - that's to say if you can describe the 'situation' that you are in, the book will lay out for you the applicable rules, guidelines, directions and avenues for appeal, etc. Consequently it is very accessible to ordinary people. This isn't a cheap book (unless you find a second hand copy) but it will repay the investment if your work brings you into repeated contact with people with immigration issues (eg in some social support/care role). Some might say that in most cases people have (some) access to professional support and advice, but this book comes into its own where that access is either not free, or not readily available. There's no substitute for a good lawyer or immigration agent advising you on an immigration matter, but this book will enable you better prepare before you meet them (what papers to take, what questions to ask), and enable you to - in a rough and ready sense - verify that your lawyer or agent isn't leading you up the garden path. Furthermore, it gives the reader the opportunity to understand and use the same jargon that the immigration people use, which gives you the advantage over 'ordinary' clients when you are trying to attract their attention - and their sympathy - to your cause.
