Although a rather dry read of his actions during the war, what you really get a feel for is how such a Petty Argument between two leaders in the south might have cost them the war. When Davis raised up men to the newest rank of Full General he was supposed to promote them depending on their time in the Union Army. This would have made Johnston the 2nd most senior Full General only behind little known Samuel Cooper. Instead Jonston found himself senior only to PGT Beaurgaurd. Their disputes would time and again cost the CSA dearly.

This was very disappointing. Most of the content was used to defend his positions during the war. He and Jefferson Davis had a real hatred for each other and whenever Joe Johnston found out about some publication that tainted his reputation he defended himself almost to the point of childishness. His time would have been better spent in recording history. Instead his approach has caused a great injustice by him not documenting the real stories which are only glossed over in his narrative.
