I remember reading this book and thinking it was "naughty." I gave it to my youth group leader after I read it...and never got it back. She must have thought it was naughty, too.

A very frank exploration of teenage sex and pregnancy. I thought the author did a good job of presenting the many decisions that face a teenage girl who is pregnant--from whether she should have an abortion or go through the pregnancy to who to tell to whether she should keep the baby after it's born or give it up for adoption. All hard decisions for anyone, let alone a teenage girl trying to make them on her own. Julie also explores the consequences of different decsions--how life will change if she keeps the child and how she will feel if she gives up the child.

China and Deedee are sent to help at the main camp kitchen during a writer's conference (which they mishear as a riders conference.) Author Johnson does a good job at using language which allows the girls to continue to believe that the small group are riders rather than writers. When the girls overhear two of the female writers plotting to kill Harrison and then meet a high school camper named Harrison, they fear the worst. Then, Harrison disappears at the same time the writers are rejoicing about working out all the details of their "murder plot". The truth is revealed at the final evenings skit night.

Have you ever met someone and known immediately that you connected? This happens when B.T. and China meet, and the spark of a friendship is sown. But as China learns more about B.T.'s world, will she succumb to the temptation to use him to become important?

Another case of having to suspend belief! Why would two normally practical teens think that wild black bears would make good pets?

The world values outside appearances and rarely looks past them. China must learn to look past the homeliness of a new co-worker to see his true character. I don't like that China tries to be so independent of authority and hides things from the adults when she should tell them what's going on.

Thoughtful enough to be interesting, not thoughtful enough to read more of them.

Where were the kids like me? There was nothing I could relate to. Nothing
