A liverpool saga. Della, from a big, happy (though poor) family, starts work, grows up, and falls in love. Her life has ups and downs, and is described before and during WWII. There's a good picture painted of everyday life during air-raids, and what it was like waiting for men to come home - or not - from the war. A fast-moving plot, and mostly well-written. However I found the characters a bit flat, with not much emotion.
