Literary. I use that term when I want to say a book might be difficult to read but worth it. The difficulty here comes in three forms:

As it’s a novel of these brothers’ memories, sometimes you’re getting snapshots and what seems to be jus a flow of consciousness. Cool, I get it. It’s a writing style. It just takes a minute to understand what the author is giving you.

Second, it’s not a pleasant story. From the beginning, with their parents fighting, to the end, people are making bad choices. That can be difficult to read, but I enjoyed it because it’s true to life and, though fictionalized here, it helps you understand the people who make those same kinds of choices in real life.

Third, the voices change throughout the book. The author has said as much. It might be confusing or jarring, but again, take it for what it is. It’s art, and in the end, you’ll see the whole package.

The Brothers Silver is the story of brothers Leon and Jules told over several decades. They grow up in a broken home. Their father and mother are in a destructive and abusive relationship. The mother can't stop loving the father, although he is abusive. Finally, they divorce. The mother makes constant suicide attempts. The father has a low and repulsive attitude towards women.
Leon, the favorite child, is so bright, but becomes addicted to drugs, setting up an awful life. Jake abandons a relationship with a woman. Jules wanders through life.
The chapters are told by a variety of characters, and also include a cousin and uncle/aunt. The chapters for the most part are L-O-N-G. Way too long, in my opinion.
I didn't care for any of the characters, the way they lived their lives, nor the derogatory attitude and treatment of women. I could not relate to any of them.
I appreciate the efforts the author took to craft this tale of the sad, pathetic lives of the brothers, and the sad start they were given in life. I just didn't enjoy the overwhelming heartache that ran throughout the book.

The Brother’s Silver is a fascinating but sad story of two brothers trying to navigate through their adult life after suffering years of child abuse at the hands of their parents and other family members.

I really enjoyed this novel by Marc S Jampole. There is no denying this author is overflowing with talent, and I wasn’t surprised to see he has already won a bunch of awards.

Straight away from the first few pages I was drawn in. The storyline was compelling, emotional, very entertaining, even in the most heart-wrenching scenes. The characters were identifiable, and I felt great empathy for them from early on in the story. This is a great read for fans of books with a lot of depth and emotion.… (altro)
