This was a tough read for a couple of reasons. As the author says, this is an academic effort that covers many issues tied to race including derivations of words. The theme is that Canada should not be smug about our history when we compare our racial history to that of the United States. He clearly illustrates that we do not have a history of which to be proud when it comes to race.

Of special interest to me was the chapter on the Queens Bush, an early settlement of Black settlers who had fled slavery in the USA during the 1840's. I am sure my father's first farm was on land cleared by those settlers from which they had been forced by land companies that were selling the land to white settlers.

A disturbing book in that it makes the reader search their attitude to race.

Beautiful selection of pictures -- Steve Martin has excellent taste. The essays are probably more of interest to serious art buffs, but I did like the essay on Harris's practice of drawing sketches on beaverboard for transferring to a larger canvas later. Recommended if you like the works of the Group of Seven.
