Amazing. Excellent for book clubs, civic groups, and each of us.

"When I was six years old, the night before school started, my sister was killed by a land mine."

The above sentence is the opener to this book, whose full title is: "The Rebirth of Hope - My Journey from Vietnam War Child to American Citizen."

Even though the opening is a hard shock, and though the pages and chapters are filled with hardship, interlaced within is also a sense of hope and a voice that is at once kind and accepting, while pragmatic and honest. I can't imagine how hard it must have been to relive those memories and write them, especially with such dedication and excellence in the writing itself.

With this book, I learned things about immigration that I always wondered and didn't know. It is also a stark reminder of the privilege we have in this country: a privilege we should never take for granted.

I can see book clubs loving this book, and it is short enough for everyone to digest, but big on content, and I would imagine this book would lend itself well to discussion. I wish Texas schools actually had time for social studies and not just test taking, as this would be a memorable account for Texas students to encounter. Excellent job, Sau Le Hudecek, I'm so glad you told your story. Highly Highly Recommend. (Would you ever think about making an audio? There is really nothing to lose, and I think your story would be even more compelling when heard orally.)
